That is - something in the sky that you cannot identify.

Could be anything. aircraft, bird, balloon, cloud....if you look up into the sky, see something and think "oooh, I wonder what that is" you have seen a UFO.

UFO does NOT mean spaceship and people who think it does are very very very very very very very very very very STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPID

YANBU, we'll send all the non-believers your way. grin

I thought that UFO meant unidentified to anyone - not just stuff that can't be identified by a casual observer

I'm fairly sure I can't identify different species of frogs - doesn't mean they don't exist

far too casual use of the word UFO grin

hecate Sat 30-Aug-08 11:39:28

I'm now wondering if, really, I should have put this in Pedants' Corner...

FrannyandZooey Sat 30-Aug-08 11:40:03

what a bizarre thing to get cross about

are you serious? really?

FrannyandZooey Sat 30-Aug-08 11:40:43

oh cross posts you aren't
are you?

hecate Sat 30-Aug-08 11:44:21

If you look up at the sky and you see something and you hve no clue what it is - it is an unidentified flying object. You have therefore seen a UFO. If you then go on to report it, it is investigated and they go <shrug> "no idea", it is an unidentified flying object.

Either way, if you see something in the sky and you squint and can't make it out, it is a UFO.

UFO does NOT mean spaceship.

Try reading Kim Newman's Jago for a good take on consensus reality. ANd then you can do as I did and storm late into the pub yelling 'OK which one of you bastards stopped believing in the Northern Line?'

hecate Sat 30-Aug-08 11:46:36

lol, no franny, I'm not cross!

<confession...> I do get irritated by it though blush but it doesn't affect my day! grin But I must confess it does make me what to grab them and shake them and yell "UFO is NOT A SPACESHIP"

So. Do you think I'm totally anal then? grin

3andnomore Sat 30-Aug-08 11:47:02

lol...never looked at that from that point of view... grin

how do you feel about Aliens though ? grin

I kinda can't believe that earth could be the only planet accomodating any lifeforms...blush

hecate Sat 30-Aug-08 11:47:13

hecate Sat 30-Aug-08 11:47:51

Yes, I believe that many, many other planets have life on them.

I don't think you're anal

just when you look up do you have a problem with telling the difference between a pigeon and fresh air?

Do you walk around saying that you are constantly seeing UFO's cos that would drive me barmy?

Overmydeadbody Sat 30-Aug-08 11:51:04

I'm with you on this one hecate.

Kimi Sat 30-Aug-08 11:51:21

The truth is out there grin

suzywong Sat 30-Aug-08 11:52:25

UFO is used as a term to mean things that people believe to be alien spacecraft. The woman's meaning was perfectly and entirely clear and I really don't understand your fury.
She does not believe that alien spacecraft are circling the earth.

LaDiDaDi Sat 30-Aug-08 11:59:47

Feeling like absolute shit today but this thread has made me smile.

Thanks hecate, I'll think of you next time I see a UFO grin.

Lauriefairycake Sat 30-Aug-08 12:00:49

do people actually think that alien spacecraft are circling the earth? hmm
