There is a single guy who lives below us. He has recently started complaining about the noise my DD makes.

We tell her off if she starts jumping and try to keep her out of our room in the morning as his bedroom is below ours.

He has just sent up a letter asking us to keep our DD quite. What am I suppose to do, you can't explain to a 2yr how to keep quite.

Just to add, we bought the freehold to our flats Jan 2007, all 3 flats agreed to pay £500 straight away to do bits and bobs that needed doing he only paid £90. We also agreed to pay £30 a month from Jan 08 and guess what he has only paid £30 in the 8mths. He has started all this complaining since we had an arguement in March as he wasn't paying anything into the business account.

He is really pissing me off and upsetting me as I don't know how to keep a 2yr old quiet and he isn't paying his share of the freehold

Any ideas please?

Do you have the financial agreements in writing?

Report
allgonebellyup · 12/08/2008 19:07

ooooooooh he sounds like a total tosser.

Can you try and explain to him how difficult it is for a 2yr old to understand she has to be quiet?

YANBU

Aside from the financial matter, anyone who lives in a flat has to accept a certain amount of noise from neighbours and one two year old child does not sound excessive.

Buy your daughter a drum set, that will show him what annoying noise is

Oh fgs, ignore him. If he doesn't like it he can move.

Tell him to sodding grow up or better still invite him in and see if he can do a better job of keeping her quiet .

Because of the arguement in March an agreement has now been done.

I feel like getting up at 3.30 every morning now just to jump on the floor.

I have also explained that we keep her as quiet as we can but she is 2!! He is a total nob

Ask hime to ring his Mum up so she can tell him if he floated around in a plastic bubble as a two year old or was just a normal noisy two year old.

Start making really really noisy "when harry met sally" sex noises night and day.

See if he dares to complain.

Report
LittleBella · 12/08/2008 19:17

Oh and superfluously mention that you're "trying for another one" when you see him.

He'll soon move out.

Get a thicker carpet!

Report
Freckle · 12/08/2008 19:23

His tosserishness aside, is there anyway that you can soundproof your flat? Carpets, rugs, etc. I know he's a nob but it might help to make an effort to minimise the noise.

We have just gotten new carpets thats cost quite a bit and are thick. The problem is DD walks heavy (like a lot of children) and does jump. We do our very best to keep noise to a minimum and always tell her to stop when being very nosy. I really don't know what else to do.

I once had a landlord who complained that I had noisy sex in his basement flat. (I hadn't realised the landlord lived above when I signed the contract.)

I wrote him a letter observing that one's own bedroom is generally considered a conventional, if not conservative venue in which to practice sexual intercourse, and that at this stage I was not inclined to consider any alternative venues unless he was inclined to fund them.

He never renewed my contract.

Honestly OP there is nothing you can do, you've got the carpets. If people don't want noise above them (and adults make a colossal noise walking, but you get used to it) then they either have to buy a top floor flat or a house.

Thanks littlebella, I didn't think there was anything else I could do either.

i am sure - like any reasonable person you will try to kep noise to a minimum - but that only goes so far, if he is being a twat - stop wringing your hands with worry - and put the onus on him
fuck him
