to want dh to say 'don't worry - it'll be ok'.....

..... on being told that our beloved five year old labrador got hit by a car today and was at the vet's with a badly broken back leg, instead of 'we can't afford to have her operated on, she's just going to have to be put down'...... given that he was adamant that we were going to buy a VW camper van 3 months ago (I talked him out of it) and was happy to spend £8K on that?

I've just been crying all day about my poor dog. I came home from the vets with blood all down my jeans carrying her into the surgery. DH hasn't put an arm around me or tried to comfort me in any way. He's being so cold about it. He's obviously angry that I let it happen. I'd taken her around to my mum's, who's got a massive garden. Usually the dog just sits on the lawn with the children. Today she must have seen something that needed chasing and she tore out past the garage at the end of the garden, straight into the road. I'm angry with myself and I've said sorry so many times, but I could really do with a bit of kindness.

You poor thing.

Quite bloody obviously you didn't let this happen deliberately. It was an accident. So yes ..... he should be showing some compassion (for you & the dog).

The vet may be agreeable to the fee being paid off in instalments.

Hope you sort something out.

I can understand your DH's inevitable shudder at the cost (we have just had a massive vet's bill for our dog, caused by him eating some kind of rubbish and giving himself a horrible infection ) but still...

Hope you talk him round.

I know its not good now but get some pet insurance once the op has been done. Saves you having to pay out one big bill.

Don't think it's your fault. Dogs will be dogs there is nothing you can do now. In the meantime you have to decide what you want to do about the dog.

YANBU, your DH is behaving very badly.

Don't blame yourself, it was an accident. You have sat there with her loads of times you said. How could you know that she would take off across the road?

Go and have a glass of wine/cup of tea/choc biccy.

My sister's dog broke his elbow - he had to have special surgery to repair the joint.

It cost £3600.

It'll cost at least that much for my dog I think.

Why, why, why didn't I get insurance?

He should have arranged insurance if he didn't want to be faced with vet bills.

Please don't blame yourself for this, dogs will be dogs.

If he's got £8000 for a camper van surely you can afford to pay for dog's surgery - who is a member of the family? If you really can't afford it can PDSA help?

Oh thats horrible of him.
Regardless of the cost factor, he should at the very least have comforted you.
It was an accident, not your fault, you shouldnt need to be apologising t him

I hope your dog is ok and that you are able to pay in installments.

Get pet insurance going forward!

Oh agree - Speak to the vet about installments. Most practises will do that.
Also PDSA may be able to help in some way. I think you have to be on IB or JSA though. But check.

You poor thing and your poor dog, of course YANBU, it's a horrible thing to happen.

Not your fault at all, impossible to cover every eventuality. Hope your dog gets better soon.

YANBU, your DH is being a twat.

Hopefully it's shock/upset and he'll come round to it. It's not necessarily a wildly expensive thing anyway, some fractures can be repaired fairly easily by a vet in the practice and some need more specialised attention. You won't know until they've taken xrays and checked her for other injuries.

It was a mistake, they happen. Everyone feels the same when their dog gets hit, but it's not like you planned it. He will hopefully see sense in the morning.
