AIBU?

to think mil shouldn't try to feed dd chips

mil bought bag of chips to our house (why can't she eat them at home) and dd was straight over pointing. mil said let her have some, they won't do her harm. I told her no cos they are bad for her, covered in salt and she already ate her dinner. She just kept going on saying let her have some. After literally 10 times I snapped NO and all went quiet. We are trying to get dd to eat dinner with us at the table and to me she is undermining the rules. AIBU

Apart from the salt, I can't see that one or 2 will do her any harm.

YANBU your daughter, your rules.
Was a very unhealthy, salty 'snack' to be offering anyway.
If you say no enough times she should get the message.

YANBU- welcome to my world! You're the mom, short of telling my mil to f-off I've had to be quite direct at times!

If your dd had already eaten her dinner (with you at the table, I assume) then IMO a few chips wouldn't hurt.

But does depend on how old your child is.

I occassionally make chips for our DDs.

In our deep fat fryer.

YANBU. I freaked when my MIL was feeding our 10 month old DS salt'n'vinegar crisps one day so totally understand where you are coming from. FWIW my grandparents let me have treats & sweets but never let my parents see them doing it. And my parents don't eat junk so no chance of them giving any to DS, poor kids is more likely to be eating Goji berries.

I make chips regulary.

In beef dripping.

DS2 weaned on fish and chips at 6 mths (well slight exaggeration but he did have some on a trip to England at that age).

I would get cross about people feeding my children before a meal because my DS are then BAD at eating after and I don't want them snacking all day.

But nicking a few of granny's chips sounds pretty normal to me?

Again, how old is your DD? Not talking? ("pointing" but "straight over" - so walking?)

Surely old enough for chips?

Yet again, (as in lots of other posts by other posters) your problem seems to be with MIL not with what actually happened.

Send some of those chips my way please!

A couple of chips don't hurt, it's true. But your child, your rules, so she shouldn't try to do something if you are saying no, no matter how 'harmless' it is.

YAB slightly U. She's already had dinner so MIL wasn't undermining you and the likelhood DD would have only wanted acouple because she'd already eaten.

For future ask MIL not to bring them if you feel that strongly but you may turn them into 'forbidden fruit'.

My two (now 8 & 4)were occasionally allowed chips and they're not in the slightest bit interested in them now. They much prefer pasta or cous cous mixed with sweetcorn.

i would be mightily fecked off if somebody turned up at my house eating a bag of chips full stop.is that not rather rude?

Actually I was just wondering recently whether chips are now a total "no no" in the UK?

People here would think you were off your rocker for refusing chips to a child old enough to point (France).

Well divastrop think you answered my question.

YANBU!! Welcome to my world too. MY mil thinks she can feed my eldest son anything she wants to without ever checking with me first if its ok. Have spoken up a few times but once he's taken it its a bit late then isn't it?

Relax and chill out a bit - if she'd already eaten then a couple of chips wouldn't do her any harm, and it's a bit much to expect every morsel of food to be eaten at the table with you. If she's old enough to walk and point then I imagine she will realise that a couple of chips from Granny is not her dinner.

they're just fried potato. i'd maybe have been a bit precious and asked her to rinse the salt off them first, though.

dd is 13 months, she has eaten a couple of chips before but not from the chippy covered in salt. and i don't think mil should bring chips round anyway. it was pizza last week. it was the timing more than anything and she does annoy me anyway, the mil that is.
