It really anoys me when parents say things like "The dog is so good with my dd, it lets her pull his ears, ride him, swing him about etc".
It is not fair on the poor animal. Just because the dog won't bo anything about it dosn't mean to say that he enjoys being treated like another toy.
I strongly feel that children should grow up having respect for all living things. We have a dog and my daughter is very gentle with him, as he is with her. We have taught her from a very early age that he is not a toy. It must be an awful life for a dog that's being terrorised by a child.
Also there may come a time when a child will treat a strange dog like she does her own and it may attack her.

YANBU, it is not kind or wise to let the child pinch and pull on the dog as though it's a toy.

Yes that's true. I feel that when you take on a pet you have a duty to care for it and protect it from harm.

YANBU - sometimes the problem comes when people get a pet which is completely unsuitable for a family - which is not the animal's fault.

We've also had similar issues with children visiting our house, who haven't been brought up with animals and don't understand that you can't tease them or pull them or pinch them. Sorry but my pets are part of the family and I expect them to be treated with respect!

I was talking to a woman the other day who says that her daughter loves animals and then went on to say how the dog is soo good to let her pull him, swing him etc etc. I was so I said somthing like "oh, your poor dog!" and she said Oh, he dosn't mind, he loves her.
Which sould he a reason to teach her to be respectful of him, you would think. I felt quite .
Dogs love their owners unconditionally, it has heen known for a dog to save the life of his owner that's abused him.

greenlawn- good for you, that's the way it should be too. Just like I wouldn't have a child come to our house and terrories our daughter.
