hello!

Dont know if this is the right place to post but..

This morning i got a bank draft through the door.
A hand written envalope with a london post mark. Before i opened it i was wondering what it could be as i had sold a few bits and bobs.
So i open it half asleep after stumbling down the stares to let dogs out in the pouring rain and read £50.00.
Im thinking... what did i sell for fifty pound?
Tnen when the rain woke me up properly i notice its actually £5000, from National Irish Bank, its all hand written, signed (by manager??) and dated.
Anyway! I have no idea where this came from! All i can think off is when i was a student someone asked to buy some images from me for a mag, i said yes, but nothing (as far as i know) ever came from it. I just assumed they had changed their minds.

What should i do??? I was thinking citizens advise might be able to help, or should i just ask my bank?
its making me paranion lol.

Wow. I think I'd probably call the issuing bank. Hopefully it is yours and you can go off and celebrate with a clear conscience!

Call National Irish Bank. They'll be able to tell you if it's genuine or not (they'll trace the chq number). Not sure if they'll be able to tell you who bought it though. hth.

anybody can cash a bankers draft cant they? as in they are not usually made out to anyone?

Take it to your bank in the original envelope if you still have it but be prepared for it to be a fake.

If it isn't a fake, then I would call up National Irish Bank and get them to absolutely bollock whoever drew it for you and posted it!

Is it made out to your name? It should be (I work for a bank) so that it can be paid into your account only. Also should be a crossed a?c payee only.

If it's paid to cash then probably dodgy

Edam,

I just went to the contact page. It says :-

Important information
Danske Bank A/S, acting through its Irish branch, trades as National Irish Bank and NIB. Registered branch in Ireland Company No. 905623 with office at: 3rd Floor, International House, 3 Harbourmaster Place, IFSC, Dublin 1.

I worked for Danske Bank in Copenhagan about 4 years ago.. when i was 18. I worked through a different company though called anovo..

Freaking me out

There are a lot of schemes where people get paid by a fake bankers draft, for much more than they're owed, and then are asked to refund the extra money via bank transfer or similar.

Report
hollyandnoah · 02/08/2008 23:06

there was no letter or contact number in it.. like so if they wanted anything refunded i wouldnt know..

How strange, holly. Still suspect this is dodgy but it would be be so very nice if it was real money that was really yours...

Well, presumably they will email you and explain, iyswim.

No harm in trying to cash it (as long as you assume it may be fake), but surely even normal payments include an explanation of who they're from.

NB: the money coming through doesn't mean it's not fake, I think you need to wait a week or two, to be sure.

Looking online, it looks like there are quite a few fake bankers drafts from them kicking around.
