AIBU?

to want to report my brother to the police?

He had been taking driving lessons. Test date changed because he isn't ready.
Now i find out that he drives about locally in the evenings occasionally.

What a stupid idiot! I can't believe he would be so stupid.

He thinks he is such a good driver already and obviously above the law.

I really want to report him and get him off the road before something bad happens to someone. But how do i do it? I don't know his address or any car details.

Report him. I had a friend who was hit by an unlicensed driver and permanently injured. It took him more than 12 years to get a penny of compensation (had to come from the state, as obviously the unlicensed driver was also uninsured).

Don't know how you'd go about finding his details, but if you possibly can, please report him.

can you tell him you're going to report him first? or not that kind of relationshp? you must report him. not nice but if he isn't ready for his test he really really isn't ready to be on the road. if he gets caught he will get banned by the way and have to go through the whole test thing again later on. and the insurance!

You know his name and date of birth, that should be enough info.
But what will happen if he finds out that it was you?

If he's your brother - don't you know where he lives?

Do you know what time he goes out?

cluelessnchaos · 19/07/2008 11:58

Cant you tell him that you will call the police if he does it again, he would surely see sense and not risk the hard work he has put in to learn.

We don't have a close relationship and if i tell him i will report him he wil probably go mad!
I know the village he lives in but not the address. It is his mates house.
I suspect if i warn him i will report him if he does it again he would do it anyway and just not tell me.

He even hinted, that he goes out driving,to our Dad today! He said it was ok because he never sees a police car. Dad was shocked he could be so stupid too.

YANBU

Just go to the police with what info you have - they'll let you know if they need any more info and they will take it seriously. I personally wouldn't tell anyone
about reporting him. If he thinks he got caught out of the blue rather than as a result of being reported he'll probably accept it better and realise what a fool he has been.

I agree with BigBadMousey, you should def say something, if anything happened (God forbid) then how would you feel if you didn't say something? At least if you say something to the police, then the onus is on them to stop him and you will have done your bit to stop someone innocent from potentially being hurt. Again, I wouldn't tell anyone about reporting him just in case anything backfired from him to you, but I def would have to say something for his and others safety.

yikes.

if he is driving on a provisional license with no supervisor then that means he is driving uninsured. his insurance policy will not cover him or the other party if he has an accident whilst driving on a learner permit without proper supervision.

i was hit by an uninsured motorist.

it was the straw that broke the camel's back, but i wound up in bankrupcy court afterwards.

This is highly illegal. But it's your brother.

If you have told him it's not on and he has said he doesn't care...

Umm it's down to your relationship with your brother.

Do what you feel best. Bear in mind that if anything happens, you knew he was driving etc.

In fact, he is driving uninsured, unlicenced. That makes him someone who I, and the courts, would regard very badly if anything happened.

If he hits someone he is fucked.

Actually yes. Shop him. Sorry.

if he hits someone, they may be VERY fucked.

particulary if they have only third-party insurance.

tortoise........ do everything you can to not let him get behind the wheel illegally.

My brother had passed his test and had an unexplained accident when he was nearly 19 and died.

He was not jack the lad, he was not driving like an arse, he was not under the influence, there was nothing wrong with the car...... totally unexplained.

I would not wish that pain upon anybody.

He could end up killing and not being killed. He might be ok, but are you prepared to take either risk.

What he is doing is stupid and irresponsible.

very selfish. very self centered. he does realise that the police don't all sit in pretty white yellow and blue cars doesn't he?

it's not that hard to get a test time here, though, Kerry.

and i'd shop him becuase you know, if someone hit out car in his situation, we'd be fucked. we only have 3rd party on our car because that's what we can afford.

i think it's bullshit that people like him do this to people and get off with a small fine and points on their provisional license and that's it.

Over all opinion seems to be that i am right to report him. My Mum is not impressed. She can't do much though, she lives abroad.
I will find out local number and talk to someone about it.

Do you have a reg mark to give the police of the car he drives. They'll need this from you to put a report on it.

Report
tortoise · 20/07/2008 21:37

No i don't. No way of finding it out either unless i allowed him to drive it here which i don't want him to do.

Do you know where he lives, the make or model of the car? I am a police officer and not a lot the police can do if you don't have this info.

Report
tortoise · 20/07/2008 21:42

I know the village (very small one)but not the address. I expect my Mum would know what sort of car it is.

The police would have to catch him actually using it on the road without a licence in order to do something.

And to do that they'd need make/model and an address at the very least so they could go round and get the Reg Mark. Otherwise they won't know what sort of car they're looking for in order to pull him over and catch him in the act.
