AIBU?

“If you are ever in the market we would be interested in your house”

We live in a desirable village in an expensive area. Today we had a letter through our door, summarised it read something like:

we are looking to move in the area and have flagged your home as one we would be interested in of you were in the market to move. If you consider selling in the near future we would love to hear from you and would be willing to negotiate a price around the X mark, which we believe to be higher than the asking price you would be recommended by an agent

AIBU to think this is really cheeky and intrusive? They are being very upfront about essentially eyeing up my home.

I’m not in the market to move but if I was they would be bottom of the list, regardless of money.

It wouldn't bother me. They're using their initiative.

I think it’s great and would contact them if I was selling.

It's not cheeky at all, if you're not interested in selling just throw the letter away.

Ive heard it recommended on here. Shy bairns get nowt and all that. It can be effective. They're not trying to be CF.

If you’ve ever watched a property show this is advised in difficult to find areas. It’s a compliment!

People are so weird. I am selling my house and people are so strange.

If someone was interested in selling they could ££££ from not having to pay estate agent fees.

This is currently being advised by estate agents as the property market has gone crazy! I'd take it as a compliment you clearly have a desirable home!

If I were thinking of selling I’d love this, you could go straight to private sale and avoid all the EA fees. I think you’re being a bit harsh, these are the measures people are driven too when there’s a lot of demand and little supple.

They had said they researched online about bedrooms, bathrooms etc from previous sales. I just found it really weird and intrusive but I guess it’s not that uncommon from the sounds of it

I don't think it's cheeky at all, in fact we did just that years ago. If you were inclined to sell, you'd save estate agents' fees. As you're not, throw the letter away and forget about it.

Don't be so ridiculous. It's a compliment.

I know two different people who have bought a house this way, happened to hit it lucky where the home owners were about to go to market. Saves money on estate agent fees too.

Maybe they have a relative/friends in the same street or nearby? They might have put a letter in the whole streets letter boxes? Maybe its a guise for a real estate agent? Hard to say, but if you arent looking at selling, just ignore.

It’s a perfectly sensible thing to do. It was a polite note through the door. They didn’t ring the bell, barge in and refuse to leave until your agree to sell.

My sister just bought a house by asking if anyone in the area was interested in selling and a local landlord said he was selling once his tenants moved out (they just bought their own home) so no estate agents involved and everyone happy.

Yes, as stated already, it's quite a common thing to do these days and is often recommended, people even do it in areas that are no doubt less desirable than yours 😁

It's not cheeky at all. They are interested in buying your home if you are interested in selling. Calm down.

I cant see any issue with this at all.

I would very much take it as a compliment and it's natural having a nosey at houses that have sold in an area you like.

Not like they were rummaging through your bins.

Well, the word "flagged" sounds a bit odd in this context and I wouldn't be keen on the way they have effectively told you what kind of price you should be happy to accept.

But generally I don't think it's wrong to put a note through someone's door to say "we'd like to buy your house".

Calm down 🙄 it’s really not that unusual and is a great way to avoid all the selling fees. What a strange thing to get your knickers in a twist about.

I would regard it as a compliment. Anyone can find out information online and it’s good they’ve done some research. It’s a bonus if you don’t need to pay agents fees, surely.
