Why do people think that its ok to comment on what your eating in the staffroom.
I was eating a tuna salad and someone asked me if i was eating dog food. How rude! Will eat in the car from now on. Fed up with everyone commenting at each others lunch. Back off!

Or when they comment on how healthy or unhealthy everything is! Drive me nuts.

I mean it is pretty antisocial to eat smelly food in the canteen. But if it wasn’t especially smelly then YANBU.

Obviously it absolutely reeks and they are letting you know! I think foods like tuna in a working space is pretty crappy Grin

Tuna stinks. It was a hint to eat it out of the office.

What are acceptable foods for the staff canteen?

Was it smelly? I love tuna but it can smell strong & I remember a colleague on some weird diet used to eat it out of a can. I did comment tbh.

Fish should be banned in a workplace IMO. A colleague used to cook fish in the microwave at lunch. Selfish bastard. It stank the building out and the microwave made everything taste fishy.

Things that don't smell. I wouldn't bring in my delicious but pungent leftover Ma Pu Tofu to work.

Agreed. Along with curry, eggs, and anything particularly crunchy or slurpy. Carrot sticks and soup if you’re unable to eat it quietly.

I can't say I have ever seen this happen in our staff room. Sat next to someone right now eating very smelly curry and nobody would comment.

I think i will eat in the car. I eat fish as its healthy and helps maintain my weight but i get that everyone else finds it smelly.
I have noted though that even when people bring in something innocuous like soup or sandwich people start a discussion about it. WHY?!

Benefits of WFH. I used to get passive agressive commments on my portions like ‘oooh is that all for you?’ and ‘you’re not eating again?’ 🙄 Yes, yes I am and what of it 🤣

People should be banned from cooking eggs in staff room microwaves too.

People tend to be very interested in food. Very popular conversation in our office starts with 'what are you having for tea?' followed by comments ranging from 'ooh I fancy that now' to 'I don't know how you could eat that'. We probably wouldn't win the award for office with the most scintillating conversations, but no one seems to get upset.

No don’t eat in your car. The canteen is yours to share as much as anyone else. Stand your ground and don’t listen to the petty comments from “adults” complaining about the smell of tuna and that too in a salad! It’s not like you are microwaving fish!

I used to get comments on the amount of food I ate, which was apparently too small. I'm not usually very hungry during our mandated lunch time, so I usually just have a small snack. Anyway, I no longer eat in the staffroom. People can be so rude sometimes and I was tired of hearing their comments.

Tuna is a very strong smell.
It still turns my stomach over 25 years after a rather unfortunate incident.

But generally people should be able to eat without unsolicited comment about quantity or health.

I’ve worked with someone that did that. So bloody rude.

The most I ever say is “Oo that looks lovely” but even then I get a voice in my head that says ‘don’t comment on other people’s food’
I was it one of those tins with peel off lid that looks a bit like Caesar dog food? encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSNevNy5tdjXffMXidoRG179rFDUkJh2UKMmg&usqp=CAU
That’s probably why he said it but he definitely shouldn’t have!
