AIBU?

To have not found the fart funny?

I went bowling on Saturday with my mum, kids and sister. I was taking a sip of my drink when I suddenly got a whiff of the most horrendous smell - like rotting meat mixed with rotten eggs and shit. I balked and said something like “Jesus what is that smell?”. The kids smelt it and started gagging. My mum was the same. My sister was in stitches with tears streaming down her face. I asked what was funny, she said she thought the smell was coming from the group of blokes next to us. It then came on again even stronger. I was so close to being sick (on antibiotics so stomach dodgy anyway). My mum suggested it smelt like bad drains. I agreed and said I’d have to go and mention it to the staff. My sister watched me go. When I returned with a member of staff my sister was creased up laughing. The area smelt absolutely horrendous. Staff member said he’d go and mention it to the manager.

Long story short, turns out it was my sister farting. She’s on constipation medication hence the foulness of the stench. My family are now retelling the story over and over again and all find it hilarious that I actually spoke to staff. I’m struggling to see the funny side. I think it was fucking disgusting and they made me look stupid getting them staff involved. I’m now being told to “lighten up, it’s Christmas!”

AIBU to not see how this is so amusing to them??

Farting is a necessary function and nothing to be ashamed of - but it's neither funny nor pleasant.

I hate performance farting.

That’s really not funny at all. How old is your sister?

YANBU and it sounds absolutely disgusting. Farting is normal, but it's polite not to do it in front of others if you can help it, especially if you know it's going to smell terrible. I'd be very annoyed if my sister did this. It's not funny, just gross and inconsiderate.

Unless your sister is 3 years old then that’s minging.

I've got family members who would find this hilarious. But they're also the ones who find it funny to do that at the dinner table or anywhere else really. It's disgusting but yes I'm always the one told to lighten up.

I'm not sure why so many posters have voted YABU Confused It so gross if it's done like that on purpose

Grim. Some people always claim farting is a natural function and can't be helped - but do people let off horrendously stinky farts in the office? In a board meeting? At a parents' evening? No?? Then they can help it. That kind of 'performance farting' as a PP so aptly put it isn't funny when inflicted on other members of the public trying to enjoy an evening out somewhere.

It's not so much about the farting itself, but that your Sister, who knew it was coming from her, allowed you to go up to staff about the smell and enquire about where it was coming from - and found that hilarious.

If she had just said something like, "sorry, that's me, I'm on medication with a bit of a side effect", you would probably all have had a slightly different giggle at her expense or sympathised with her and hope she feels better soon, but without causing OP embarrassment at having made futile enquiries with others and drawing even more attention to it, and THAT action being laughed at instead.

Especially if they were all laughing at it afterwards anyway.

Bizarre that about 20 people have voted YABU but not one of them has commented

Definitely not funny, especially as it involved wasting staff's time. I take constipation meds from time time to time but I make use of the bathroom. Farting deliberately in front of others is gross and unnecessary.

Shes on meds so can't help it, she's probably embarrassed and covering it with laughter. You sound very dramatic tbh, stinking facts are unpleasant but to speak to staff? What did you expect them to do?

Her sister let her think it was the drains. Why wouldn't you tell a member of staff if you thought they had a problem with the drains? That's not dramatic

Laughing at farts is pretty infantile, yes.

But you complained about them to a member of staff? That is pathetic. If I knew you I would find that funny too

To be fair the wording of the actual AIBU is a bit clunky

Your family are BU to keep on about it but - what did you expect from the staff?

On farting is hardly hilarious so it's a bit immature of your sister to find it so, but the dramatic reaction from you and your children are almost as bad as the fart in the first place...

I don't know how she was supposed to react to being publicly shamed for farting though.

Report
AnFiaRuaNua · 08/12/2021 13:16

So at that moment where you thought that the smell was so bad that it must be an issue with the drains, your sister should have put her hand up and said ''oh it was me, not the drains''.

That is embarrassing. It's not rocket science to understand why she tried to slip under the radar. She must have been mortified when you involved the staff!

I don't have a problem with flatulence btw. But it's human and being shamed for it is unkind. People react to really shameful situations by laughing to detach from the shame projected on to them.

If she was embarrassed I'm sure the family wouldn't be repeatedly sharing the story.

OP you're not wrong. If she can't help it that's fine but surely she'd just apologise and excuse herself to the toilet.

It seems a a bit much to get all hot and bothered about. She was most likely laughing at your reaction, which I find funny too.
