Manager at work came and told me he wanted to discuss my absence record next week with me whilst we were standing in a small room full of other employees?! AIBU to be a bit like WTF? There are numerous other rooms off this one that he could have taken me into...

To be honest I imagine if your absence record is bad enough they need to talk to you about it’s your colleagues will already know. They will have spotted you’re not there.

Hardly the point. It’s extremely unprofessional of a manager to do that and you’d be within your rights to officially complain.

Well that's a whole other story - not sure it's terribly fare including Covid absence and without it it's only been a four days this year!

@Cherrysoup thanks! I'm considering that for sure.

Depends, are covid absences due to not being vaccinated?

It isn’t right to mention your absence record in front of your peers though.

Unprofessional of him. Also. Why? Why do this? Why not just say on Wednesday or whenever, hey employee I'd like to talk to you about your absences, step in her if you would please. What's the point in telling you now in advance, apart from to worry you pointlessly? Anybody know? Or is it just another sign boss is a dick?

He should of discussed it in private but “only” 4 days apart from COVID ?? That’s a lot as there are literally zero bugs around apart from it added to all the hand washing etc. I haven’t had a sickness day since covid

@workshy44 Zero "bugs"? You clearly don't have a toddler in nursery!

Well that's not true. I work as part of a big team and over the last six weeks we've all come down with stomach bugs and colds with flu like symptoms (all tested negative for Covid)
My husband is a civil servant in a large team, in a different city to where I work, they've all experienced similar issues.

I'd have said in front of others "goodness, did you realise that I had covid?"

Report
raviolo · 28/11/2021 20:33

Lol just because you haven't been Ill doesn't mean there are no bugs around, school has norovirus and there's also been the non covid horrendous cold/cough. There are also lots of non contagious reasons for needing a sick day.... @workshy44 Biscuit

Op your manager was unprofessional

I'm one of a team of 8, all remote workers (so not picking it up from each other) , 5 of us have had days off sick I the last few weeks alone. I have 2 kids in nursery, the bugs are relentless at the moment.

Very unprofessional. Should have just invited you to office —— no need to say a reason when others were within hearing distance.

There ton's of bugs around. Ds has just had a bug and had 2 days off school. The school said quite a few kids had been off with it.

There's also been an awful cold going round, that's nor covid.

Op, yanbu it doesn't matter wether people know you were off or the reason you were off. That shouldn't happen in public.

Bully for you. Maybe the OP had a migraine, or an ear infection, or uncomfortable piles, or any of the countless other things that could cause a day off sick other than a ‘bug’.

1 absence totalling 4 days, or several absences totalling 4 days? Because that would make a difference for our procedures. If you had 3/4 separate absences then that would trigger further action. You’re right that it shouldn’t have been brought up in front of others though.

cakecakecheese · 28/11/2021 20:40

Definitely complain that was unprofessional. Absence meetings should be discussed carefully, there could be all sorts of reasons, underlying health conditions, mental health issues etc so the correct thing to do is nicely and privately ask to discuss it, preferably via email, this sounds a bit abrupt to me not to mention the lack of confidentiality.

@Bluntness100👏😂 you always make me laugh, although never entirely sure if that is your intention💐

Report
Neverfightamanwithaperm · 28/11/2021 20:43

@Helpstopthepain Not sure that's a valid argument as you still have to take a PCR if you have symptoms and wait for the results regardless if vaccinated or not. (FYI I am vaccinated but want for half of the year, couldn't have gotten it any sooner!)

@workshy44 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. My delightful toddler has brought one a new bug every week since the start of october. Multiple sickness bugs, colds, you name it he's had endured it (except covid)...then a few days later my youngest gets to endure it. If I were on maternity leave I honestly do not know how many sick days we would have needed as a family to get through it.

Still haven't tested positive for covid

'Zero bugs'?!?!
Where are you, and who are you mixung with, @workshy44 ?
All the settings round us with children in have been rife with all sorts since September. Covid, dreadful colds, sickness, hand, foot and mouth, chicken pox. You name it, the kids have it and are passing it around.
