AIBU?

Changed nappy on restaurant table

I went to an independent pizza place for lunch with a friend. Her 4 month old did a poo. The restaurant only had one tiny toilet with no changing space. My friend used the empty table next to us to change her baby. I was mortified and other customers watched us, I think one was filming us surreptitiously. Am I wrong not to want to go to lunch with her again. Fwiw I have 3 small children and I would have changed them outside.

YABU: she had nowhere else to change the baby
YANBU: that was a disgusting thing to do

It is never justified to change a nappy on a restaurant table.

Did you say something? I wouldn’t be happy if I was a diner.

That is vile and a real health hazard. Did you say something to her or just let her get on with it?

Disgusting.
I would of went out the restaurant to find somewhere suitable

So revolting! I would have changed on toilet floor or found somewhere outside

I wouldn’t have gone outside. I would have positioned myself next to the toilet and done it in my pram. On a table is just gross.

Oh dear...I used to change my DD in her carry cot or the back of the car in these situations.

Even the tiniest loo has a changing space: you put the lid down and do it on there, one hand holding them so they don’t roll off. Or on your lap. At four months they’re still small enough.

Outside, where? She could have gone back to her car and changed baby there I suppose. Another option would have been to change baby in a chair or other seating. Next time I would pick somewhere child friendly.

I would never have done this. I would have gone outside and found somewhere or gone to the car. My brother once changed his baby on our table during Sunday lunch in a village pub and said "it's OK thankfully just wind" and I was absolutely disgusted and we had a full on row about how inappropriate it was.

When she started getting prepared to change him, I suggested going outside but she said it was too cold outside. I was so embarrassed and I didn’t object as much as I could have because I was quite shocked that it was happening.

Yes that’s gross. Utterly vile. Meanwhile, I would also be asking why they don’t have anywhere to change a baby. Why the hell isn’t it compulsory in this day and age?

I've assuming the baby was in a sling! If there was a pram then definitely could have been changed in the carrycot.

@Sceptre86 we were not driving, we had walked there. I was suggesting she changed him in the pram outside.

That is vile, I'm surprised staff didn't say anything to her. She could have changed the wee on on her knee. I'd have had to tell her how unreasonable she was being.
I only hope the table was thoroughly cleaned before some unsuspecting customer sat down for lunch/tea.

Yanbu, that’s totally unacceptable. She should have put the lid down on the loo and done it on there.

I'm surprised she wasn't asked to leave.

Years ago I worked in a pub and once led a newly arrived group to their table in the restaurant only to be greeted with the people on the next table mid shitty nappy change on the new groups table. Wine glasses and cutlery shoved aside to make room.

It's completely disgusting. No one wants faeces where they eat, it's that simple. The poor people trying to enjoy their meal with that going on nearby.

She had a pram with her?! Why on earth didn't she take it into / near the loos and change there?!

I would have asked the waiter where they would like me to change my baby if the toilet was too small.
A table is disgusting, and outside too cold at the moment.

@Justilou1 this place is really tiny. It only has one small toilet for men and women to share. I am not excusing it but it would be very difficult to provide a changing space.
