The last few days I have been hanging out alone as ex dp has the dcs over half term.
I've been on country walks, to cafes, to beaches etc., with my dogs. It's been lovely. One issue which has irked me slightly is how some people have really been staring at me. Is it because I'm a shameless 40 something out enjoying myself alone. Is that a crime? One woman in a cafe stared at me the whole time (to the point of ignoring her whole family sitting at the table with her). Another woman looked me up and down with distain when I went in her shop. Another woman scowled at me as I walked down the beach. Have people just got more starey? Do I look odd? What is going on?

Are you perhaps being a bit over sensitive?

Don’t worry about it, and stop looking at people !

Do you think you've maybe noticed it because you didn't have DC to see to etc?

I think you're imagining it.

@Letsallscreamatthesistene in what way? Can you explain?

I think you were self consciously starting at these people and they, a bit freaked out, stared back Grin

@CocaColaTruck1 possibly but didn't realise how starey people can be. Everytime I looked up from my guardian newspaper in the cafe the woman was glaring at me. I didnt know where to look!

I wouldn’t stare at someone out on their own. I was single to my mid 30s and did many things in my own, although I drew the line at going to a restaurant or the cinema on my own. Now that I’m married I still wouldn’t go to the cinema alone, but I have eaten alone, although don’t like it. But I’ve not been aware of anyone staring. Are you sure you aren’t being over sensitive? I’d wear a huge smile and say ‘good afternoon’ to everyone I see and you might feel differently and get a different response.

You seem very aware of the people around you. I too wonder if you yourself are looking at people and they are actually just staring back.

Did you have your skirt tucked in your pants?? Jokes aside, I'm in my mid 40s & single & regularly take my dogs out for walks & I certainly don't get stared at or funny looks. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Could it be your presuming they are thinking x, when in reality it could be something different ?

You should have given her a cheery wave! Either that or if she was the same age as you or younger, gone up to her and said 'I thought I recognised you - you were my old headmistress weren't you!'

Ha ha, I get this some days, and always text my partner to tell him that today is obviously my two-head day.

I think a cheery wave might be going a bit far (!) but I do like to unnerve strangers by smiling at them if they stare. Most of the time they just smile back.

You know they are staring/watching at you because you are staring at them!
I wouldn't know if anyone does because I don't pay any attention to people around me.

I don't think people are staring at you (unless you have a chip stuck to your face or something).

I think you were feeling self conscious about being out alone. In reality, it is a perfectly normal thing to do, and nobody would notice you at all.
