Going back to work tomorrow and LO is 6 months old. He's going to nursery a maximum of 3 days a week but it's going to depend on how my husbands shifts fall. I've got no idea what to expect at drop off. I was considering dropping him off early to avoid the hustle and bustle as nursery have said its 'mad' in the morning.
I was thinking I could throw some joggers and a jumper on and drop him off at around 7/7.30 then come home and get ready for work properly.
But then he's woken up this morning (he's usually up at 7) and he's so happy to see me. I don't know how I'd feel about literally getting him up and dressed then straight out the door. :(
How long does nursery drop off usually take? To get in the building etc. I'm so nervous and feeling a little bit guilty.
Bonus points for any answers which tell me how much your 6 month old loved nursery.

Couple of questions- has he done any settling in sessions? What time does the nursery actually open? What's the parking like?

It used to take a good 15 mins from car to car when we dropped off but that was partly because we had to park up and walk and also because it was one at a time at the doorstep for covid. Could do it quicker if we were bang on 8am which was the time we'd paid for her to start from, most of the 8am crew started arriving at 8.05 I'd say.

If you’re up anyway just take him. You’ll be grateful of a couple of hours peace before work starts IMO.
Eat and shower in peace.
He’ll love it.

Just do it, he'll love it and you get time to yourself to recharge and get into work mode. It can only be beneficial for both of you and you're paying for it.

I agree. You'll have a short period of me-time and that would be lovely.

I leave my house at 8:58am and I'm home by 9:03am. Drop-off doesn't take long at all.

If he's 6m now have you started weaning? As I'd be inclined to keep him with you for those few hours in the morning so you can try him out with different foods/purées/BLW whatever you're doing

Normally 10 minutes max but it depends if they are allowing you in to drop them off or making you wait outside for them to be taken in. I do pretty much what you're planning on doing but I did build up to it as we pick up quite late too. Are they giving breakfast there?

It does depend on the breakfast situation really and if you're trying to wean on anything specific

I always drop my
Daughter off as soon as it opens then come home and sort myself out before going to work. I'm paying for the full day so mayswell. My nursery drop off takes literally 30 seconds.

You’ll have to collect by 5pm as 10 hours is the legal max time in nursery daily.

If the nursery is open of course you can drop him off, there's no rule that you must rush in at the last minute as you're running late for work even if that's what was the norm when my DC were Nursery Grin

No idea how long it will take you, I'm guess different places have different ways of doing things.

Personally I’d not be able to do that, but if it works for you then I don’t see why not. It should largely depend on how much down time you get the rest of the week though.

I would drop him off after the hustle and busle has died down and start work later to begin with, but I am self employed so have that 'privalige'.
I am so glad this phase of child rearing is behind me, it's a massive transition for mum and baby.

@Holidaytan do you have a source for that, please?

I’ve worked in private nurseries and as a childminder for 20 years and never heard that!

Is it? Ours is open 7.30am - 6pm and they’ve never mentioned that.

If you think it works for you OP, do it! I drop at 8.15 as that’s the latest she can get there and still get her breakfast (paid for so she may as well!). I work 9.30 - 5.30 from home, so I tend to come back and have a bath and a leisurely breakfast 8.45 - 9.30! It’s once a week and my only proper regular me time, I love it.

I have never heard of a maximum time at nursery. Do you have a link as I have just had a quick search and couldn't find anything.

What time will you pick him up? If you drop at 7 that’s potentially a very long day for him. Ring the nursery today and be guided by them.

I’ve never heard of a legal maximum my friends children are in there 12+ hours!!!

My local nursery opens at 8.
The parking is horrendous, parents shoving and side stepping round people on the queue to get their children in first, only one child to be "processed" I.e. one parent in to sign the child in while a member of staff takes them into their room, then comes back for another. So if you're 5th in the queue you could be standing in the rain for 10 minutes.
I've started taking my DS at 8:15ish, no queue, no parking problems, no pushy parents trying to be first in. Handover is less than a minute now.
But obviously every nursery is different and I don't know how busy yours will be at 7.

My son goes from 7am-6pm. Are you sure?

I worked in nurseries for 5 years and as Deputy I would have to remind parents of this. It’s the reason time in and time leaving needs to be recorded, as well as registering who is in the building you can check children aren’t regularly being left for longer than the max time.

@Holidaytan if it's the law it will be written down somewhere. I can't find it anywhere. Are you sure it wasn't just your nursery's policy?

Report
WaterBottle123 · 19/10/2021 08:19

That would just have been your nursery's policy @Holidaytan.

Nonsense. What about all the children of parents who work 10 or 12 hour days? Like mine who were in childcare longer than 10 hours a day.

Just make sure the nursery definitely opens at 7am. Most childcare I used officially opened at 8am. 7am starts had to be booked in advance and some places charged extra for early opening.

What time will you be pick up? At 6? It depends on your child but I think 11 hours at nursery is too long for a baby and I would want to avoid it if possible.
