Head talking about moving to homeschooling as staff are running out of fuel

This is one of our local secondary schools. South England. No fuel in our town, within 30 miles, or maybe more. DH is a teacher and he has about 2-3 days worth of petrol left. The Head of his school is putting in plans to close year groups and move to homeschooling again. Is anyone else in these dire straits? AIBU to be a bit scared? We didn’t panic buy because the government said not to, and now we’re completely stuck.

I work in a secondary, and would estimate that I’ve got enough fuel to see me to the weekend, but that’s it.

A colleague of mine has already had to borrow his mother’s car as his has run out of petrol.

We’re all rural as well, very little in the way of public transport links. If I wanted to take the train to school, I’d need to walk 40 minutes down a country lane to get to a station. And, of course, I wouldn’t be able to carry any marking or anything with me, so I’d be poorly resourced whilst doing so.

Petrol is being delivered! Both our towns petrol stations now have fuel and to be honest the services on the motorway never ran out (very expensive) I'm sure there will be delivering very soon, I can't believe it has been diverted all to us!

This is crazy. I've run out and bus/train is going to take me 3 hours (30 miles). The totally bizarre thing is the crisis of the 70s is still getting more attention than this!

@actingsergeant being without a vehicle in a rural ish area, can’t get to work, can’t get kids to school, can’t get to supermarket, can’t get to hospital / healthcare. Taxis all complaining on Facebook as some of them can’t work tomorrow. It’s an apocalypse round here.

We've had loads of delivered around here but it's going fast. I think by the end of the week people will have got over the panic buying and it will be back to normal

I’m concerned too. Live rurally. Filled up on Thursday as usual, have enough fuel for this week but then would need a complete tank full or I can’t get to school next week.

I hope that you’re right about this being a short term panic, it’s definitely been fuelled by the media.

The trouble with muppets is they tend to act like muppets... because they're... well... muppets.

I think it will be over and done with by the end of the week. It’s not like (most) people can stockpile fuel. Once everyone has finished panic buying and filled their tanks, they will have to wait until they’ve actually used the fuel to buy more. Or they will be topping up tiny amounts which may cause annoying queues at the pumps but isn’t going to have the same catastrophic effect on supply.

It's not all muppets panic buying. It's ordinary people who need fuel to get to work. I teach 38 miles from where I live. I filled up last Thursday evening as I saw this all coming, but due to work and having my MIL's funeral 75 minutes away on Saturday I am down to about a third of a tank. I have enough to get to work and back tomorrow, but I can't risk going there on Wednesday and having to abandon my car there. There is no fuel where I live and apparently none where I teach. I can get there by train but it will take 2 hours door to door (including a 30 minute bike ride, a train journey and a walk), meaning a very early start, and each day I do that will cost me £21. I have had enough of people sneering at 'panic-buyers' and 'muppets'. Most of us are just normal people who don't have the luxury of working from home and getting to feel smug.

I work 2 miles away and quite rural so will be donning my trainers come Thursday to walk in and back for a 12 hour shift if it carries on

Our nearest petrol station had a delivery early this morning but there was a 3 hour wait and by the time I got home they were closed again.

Ok, it’s a bit crap and I can understand why you would be anxious BUT it is not even close to an apocalypse. It is not the end of civilisation as we know it (not yet anyway) because some of us can’t use our cats for a week.
The next few days might be tricky for some but hopefully things will have calmed down and mostly be ok by the weekend.
Just keep you eyes open and get friends to do the same. There’ll be some fuel near you soon.

Ours don't. And I drove for an hour and a half on the M1 yesterday, and not a single service station on that journey had fuel. There were illuminated signs on every gantry saying that the next service station didn't have fuel. I'd pass that one and the same signs would be there for the next...and the next...and the next. Six in all.

It will probably get back to normal sooner than later as people can't really stockpile petrol in the same way as they can food and toilet roll. At least not without being complete idiots and creating a fire risk in their homes and vehicles.

I’m teaching from home tomorrow because my child is poorly. But I’m also completely empty. The rest of the week I will be reliant on lifts from my parents (who have an electric car) - it will be a 30 mile round trip for them twice a day amd they’re nearly 80.
