To be more scared now than I was of Covid?

I know IABU. I need to get a grip.

I wasn't frightened of Covid. The first few weeks were scary, all the uncertainty etc. But once my kids school closed, life for our family kind of carried on somewhat normally. DH and I were both out working at that point. I never thought we would catch it, we're all relatively healthy. I understood people felt differently and was sympathetic towards that, despite some of the more extreme opinions.

But now, with fuel price hikes, food shortages and now petrol being rationed, I am actually scared. It feels like all the panic of March 2020 all over again.

Don't worry, I'm not going to panic buy five million loo rolls. But I have such a sinking feeling knowing this is the start of really crap times ahead unravelling right before our eyes.

YANBU, I’m finding everything right now quite frightening. No petrol,no one to drive lorries, empty shelves, inflation, rising NIC and gas prices and cuts to UC…it feels really quite dire and I’m fretting constantly.

Don't know, but I genuinely need to buy petrol tomorrow as I'm running low, and I'm really concerned that all of the panic buyers will have bought it all up before I get there!

Petrol being rationed? Since when?

It's on BBC website, BP has closed its petrol stations because it has no one to deliver to them.

I do feel slightly better knowing other people think it's dire, not just me!

Eh? everything is completely normal where we are and the cases are sky high. We're in an area where there is over 90% vaccination, so there are few hospitalisation, but very few deaths.
The one friend I was really worried about getting it did and she was in hospital for a day - they treated her and she is fine.
We have no shortages in the supermarkets.
Fuel prices will rise, but it's not covid related.

You just need to get on with your life OP.

Bp have closed a small number of petrol stations. There is no mention of rationing.

I reckon people who are in a more comfortable financial position (many MNers) will feel less concerned as they have stable jobs and can absorb temporary or short term increases in food and gas prices. Those of us who are more skint are perhaps feeling more concerned, I don’t know where extra money will come from with the new NIC and inflation. I reckon I’ll be bringing home less each month as a result. It feels quite unsettled and not at all secure.

I think you missed the point of my post. I have been quite happily getting on with life for the last 18 months. I wasn't arsed about Covid. I am arsed about what appears to be an impending significant recession which will negatively impact me more than covid ever did.

You make it sound like BP has closed everything down. The reality is that they have closed a very small number of its many petrol stations. It also did so earlier in the summer IIRC. I think you're catastrophising.

No but most people in the UK rely on it to transport their food around the country.

I’m worried about the fuel bills more than anything. Then food prices. It looks like shit times ahead. Yet house prices still rising.?🤔

“BP has announced fuel will be rationed as the shortage of heavy goods vehicle drivers impacts the oil giant’s petrol and diesel supplies.

At a government meeting last Thursday, BP told officials that last the company’s ability to transport fuel from refineries to its network of forecourts was faltering.

Fuel will now be rationed to prevent supplies from running out altogether.”

I have to agree with you and I’ll tell you what is bothering me and that’s the wearing of masks or not wearing masks.

I travel on the underground everyday and it says we have to wear masks but it’s not a offence if you don’t so you can’t get fined .Most people do but many don’t .

Surely it’s All or Nothing?
London is becoming the joke city of the World.

The minute we left the EU prices should have shot up on food prices & deliveries should have been delayed but the COVID pandemic happened which took over the backlash of leaving the EU.

Moving on, Covid is still about but the backlash of leaving the EU with reduced drivers available is in full force with lack of drivers and food pricing going up.

I know what you mean. I despise living in the hills but I went into Frankfurt, for the first time in a few months, this week and there were so many people sat about in the street openly using hard and soft drugs and the main streets stank of piss and were full of rubbish. I was really shocked at how rough it had got and how there just seemed to be no order anymore. Not that the drug users were being unruly or horrible or anything, bless them. Just that it was like the city had given up.

Got back to my boring hill hamlet and suddenly felt quite glad to live here.

Things have really changed since pre-covid.

I do feel like this about MN sometimes. There is no concept of how people in 'the real world' manage. I have two retired parents in their 70s who can't easily absorb a significant increase in their gas bill. It's not simply a case of swapping to shopping in Aldi or taking ironing in to cover the difference for some people.

I think the current shortage of drivers , fuel
etc is due to BREXIT and not covid 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Starting threads like this really won't help the situation. People will skim read them, then go off half cocked & panic buy, making the situation worse.

Petrol & diesel are NOT being rationed. Some Esso & many BP stations are having a problem getting deliveries, it's an HGV issue, not a fuel issue.
