Ridiculous name for baby

My step son and gf have recently called their newborn a really awful pretentious name. I know it’s their choice but neither me nor my husband can bring ourselves to say it in a sentence. Every time we talk about him we say ‘the baby’ or the ‘little one’. We have been very diplomatic and said things like ‘ oh that’s unusual’ but they have started to notice we don’t use his name in conversation and it’s becoming tense.

Any advice on how to move forward?

Just do it because that's his name... it's cruel not to use it. They obviously love it or they wouldn't have chosen it.
What is a pretentious name? Like Tarquin?

Stop making this about you and call the baby it's name?

Oh dear, that's not ideal! Although as you say, unfortunately it's their baby and their choice.

Could you perhaps create a tolerable nickname from their name? Otherwise I would try and make an effort to say the name when around SS and GF, and then avoid it while with your other half!!

I think you're going to have to get used to saying it. The sooner the easier!

My dad had a problem pronouncing my DD AND Dniece's name and deliberately used his preference but that's slightly different to avoiding it altogether.

It can't be that bad, surely?

You know the rules, you've got to tell us the name before we can decide whether you are unreasonable.

But I agree you need to say his name whatever your personal feelings - like you would if he were a friend or colleague

Shall we try and guess the most ridiculous sounding names then your new wee SGS's name won't sound as bad anymore?!

I’ve explained that we just have to try, but it makes us cringe and we feel so uncomfortable. It’s a name that is also a noun so we feel it is so completely out of context.
When they gave their reasons for this name it made things worse.

In the nicest possible way gtf over yourselves. It's his name, it's not going to change.

My Grandma refused to use DS2's name as she didn't like it. It was ridiculous and changed my opinion of her massively.

Did you enquire as to why they chose the name? That might give a bit of insight and make it sound less pretentious.

You move forward by saying the baby’s name. The sooner the better, before you damage your relationship with your step son and his girlfriend any further.

How does using their child’s name correctly actually impact you though?? Do you think you get a say in what the baby should be called? You’re being absolutely awful to someone who has just given birth. Why is it becoming tense? Because you’re being deliberately cruel.

You can’t bring yourself to say it? I’m sorry but that’s pathetic. Their baby, their choice.

You need to get over it and use the baby’s name.

Albgo · 23/09/2021 16:31

It honestly doesn't matter what you think of the name or if it makes you cringe. It's the child's name - bloody well use it. You're being shockingly rude and hurtful.
