AIBU?

..to take half my house with me on holiday and STILL not get the packing right????

We are in the UK on holiday with our car. I have a 4-page packing list on my computer, put together over many years, & covering all eventualities (with dogs/beach or city etc). I hate being without my familiar creature comforts, so bring my favourite tea mug, my pillow, etc etc etc - basically half my house, and I STILL end up topping up from Amazon Prime. My husband could literally come with one pair of shorts, 7 t-shirts , 7 pairs of underwear and a can of deodorant and that would be him done. I think he’s a lunatic. AIBU?!

That does sound excessive yes, but if it makes you more comfortable go for it.

A four page packing list?! If it won't fit it my backpack it stays home.

I should explain that it also includes the dogs’ packing, plus things for the whole family to use eg chargers etc!

I had to massively scale back the packing after realising having two kids and a small car was a poor idea. I didn't need half the stuff I was taking and there's always a shop nearby.

Oh, and this is intended as a lighthearted, slightly tongue-in-cheek post! 💕

I get you .I never travel light and always end up thinking that I wish I had brought something else , whether a different coat or shoes or outfit. And also end up not using the stuff I did manage to bring.

I often wonder how some of the people on MN manage to pack for self catering holidays when they change all their clothes and pj's every day and only use each towel once! Now I know - a 4 page packing list :)

Exactly!! I wonder whether anyone, in the history of the world, has ever done a perfect pack, missing nothing out and using every single thing they take? 🤔😂

On this holiday, write down everything you actually use. Or are forced to buy.

That's your new packing list. Drop all the other stuff next time.

This is mental. Why on earth would you take a mug on holiday.

Do you also do a massive food shop full of ‘holiday treats’ and end up bringing most of them home? I’m not guilty of that…

So that your cuppa tastes just right. It’s not that weird

FellinLove - you’re my kinda person 😜. Just for the first cuppa in the morning - not fussed about all the others!

Well obviously you can do whatever you like, but I think that is insane and YABU. Surely you want to experience other stuff when you're on holiday, no?

But what are you taking that runs to 4 pages?!

I over pack, especially for the UK as you can never be confident of the weather, but 4 pages seems rather excessive.

I don't take stuff 'just in case' and I work on the principle that if I have my documents (if international) my phone and money/card then worst case scenario I can buy whatever it is that I desperately need. I think the only essential I've ever forgotten and had to buy was a beach towel in Greece.

What sort of thing are you buying from amazon?!

I prefer packing light - I'd much rather make do without something or have to wash some clothes I I sink than have to lug a massive bag everywhere.

But you aren't hurting anyone so crack on, I say!

For the UK - "do I have my bag, sunglasses, Kindle and my credit card".

For abroad - "do I have my passport, bag, sunglasses, Kindle, swimsuit and credit card".

Then it's time to travel! Anything can be bought. Except a swimsuit when you're a size 20-22, so I take mine in hand luggage in case hold luggage doesn't arrive.

What kind of thing do you have to order?

I could get on board with taking my pillow places, but I never do - I like to travel light, I don't even carry a handbag most of the time. But I generally take as little as possible. We might be at opposite ends of the spectrum Grin

Agreed.
On most of my holidays I use my old 35lt rucksack.
When air companies reduced hand luggage I just took less and used a vacuum bag to compress and make more room.

I wonder whether anyone, in the history of the world, has ever done a perfect pack, missing nothing out and using every single thing they take?

Me.
Next time you go away put to one side the things you didnt use and think why.
Look at things that can be doubled up. I have a friend who took a pair of trainers to go the gym, a pair to go walking in and a pair for casual. I took 1 pair of Nike AF and wore them on the journey there and back.
Pack smartly it makes things so much easier.

because if it's self catering, they might provide mugs that don't have white insides.

Haha, oh well, there you go everyone - I’m clearly the lunatic, & I’m in awe of you all! Tbh, I didn’t expect people to take this so seriously! I’ve been teaching myself to do various things on the computer and I did my list in the days when I was learn how to do a table on Word, so although it covers 4 pages, the actual text is probably much less.
