Can’t shake the feeling that something is weird/wrong?

Since the pandemic started really..it’s all seemed strange, some points I’ve convinced myself things are normal, but it’s there deep down bugging me. I just find it all so odd, the pushing of vaccines on young people for incentives, no real discussion being allowed apart from what is presented to us. Is this normal?! Or is it me that’s not 🤷🏻‍♀️Does anyone else feel like this?

I'm with you OP, definitely something not right

Of course this isn’t normal. It’s a pandemic. A virus that has made its way across the earth and killed hundreds of thousands of people. Scientists are trying to understand it which simultaneously trying to vaccinate the population.

With the sheer volume of people and companies involved in Covid, if 'something' was amiss, don't you think someone would've spoken out? This is an international issue, not specific to the U.K.

There are so many conspiracy theories out there, but this is a novel virus, that's bloody good at reproducing, and the government is responding as best they can. I don't see what's sinister about that Hmm

I felt this way after 9/11. But the pandemic I'm just relieved there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I know what you mean, feels like the response is disproportionate to the threat… or something.

I’m not into conspiracies though so I try not to think about or read up on it too much! Not like we can do anything about it anyway.

You mean something is wrong BESIDES about 5 million dead from a global pandemic? Confused

You touch your face every three minutes. You have mouth/hand contact every five minutes. You touch somebody else every 20 minutes. That's how contagion works…A virus exists only to find a carrier and reproduce. That's all it does and it does it quickly. It has no political views, it has no religious beliefs, it has no cultural hang-ups. And it has no respect for a badge. It has no concept of time or geography. It might as well be the Middle Ages, except for the convenience of hitching a ride on a metal tube flying from meal to meal to meal. That's how a plague begins.

To add:

The more people a virus infects, the more opportunity it has to successfully mutate.

Get it now?

Of course there is something bigger going on, I just don't know what yet.

All this madness for a virus that has something like a 99% survival rate, hmmm not suspicious at all.

I think a lot of people have no idea just how devastating COVID has been on a global scale. They can only see the impact that it has had on them and their everyday lives. They trot out statistics they've read on Facebook like 'it only kills 99.97%' with absolutely no understanding of how wildly in accurate that figure is, as everybody has different bodies with different risks and outcomes. It's ignorance at its most basic level.

Of course the government aren't trying to control people or kill them by pushing a vaccine on them that they don't need. The picture is so much bigger than that and we are all part of a world that needs us all to play our part right now.

PandaLeaves · 02/08/2021 16:35

I find it all odd too.
But then I find many things odd that doesn't mean there is anything odd going on. It's just life that is odd.

Report
intothewoodss · 02/08/2021 16:37

People want to find it odd because it's so alien and frightening to them that they are desperate for a sense of control over it all. And that leads them to questioning the reality of the situation.

It's a pandemic. They've happened before.

There’s a pandemic - obviously things are different to normal!

I don’t know what your point is about ‘discussion’ - in what way is this not allowed…?

I feel like that too. Something incredibly sinister about it all, especially the way we’re all so compliant.

Definitely! And if you dare to question anything you get shouted down as an idiot, especially on here.

When something so huge and unexpected happens, it's completely normal to feel knocked off balance and to feel as if you are just waiting for something terrible to happen or be revealed.

There is still huge uncertainty and nobody can say for sure what the country (or for that matter, the world!) will look like this time next year.

None of these things mean that there is actually a terrible conspiracy going on!

Saidtoomuch · 02/08/2021 16:45

I agree with @intothewoodss I think as a society even though we have had very high cases of Covid in this country we are very privileged that each person needing one has had a hospital bed and every adult has been offered a vaccine. We have maintained a lot of freedoms that other countries haven't enjoyed. The fact that people are thinking conspiracy and something isn't adding up shows our privilege.

totally agree OP. The way unvaccinated people are being discriminated against is awful as well. Read on here this week costa in ireland are only allowing customers in the store if they are double jabbed. Its astonishing. Yet many mumsnetters were completely fine with it. Weve been badly brainwashed.

Yeah how odd people don't want to die - or to give a deadly virus to others, that's really sinister, that is.

So if we go into lockdown again, are you going to go stand outside cinemas/pubs and scream at them to open for you? Hmm

Because that will be your only choice.

There needs to be better education on epidemiology, frankly, because I’m fed up of these ridiculous threads.

FFS not this again. It's Irish LAW. You must be vaccinated to dine indoors. It's not Costa making up a rule. And yes, the legislation has a sunset clause.

"Of course there is something bigger going on, I just don't know what yet.

It's not just about survival it's about quality of life after survival and the health service being overwhelmed. I'm not sure what the numbers are for long covid but I personally know a few people with it, relatively young and relatively healthy including a 19 year old competitive swimmer who hasn't been able to go in the water for 3 months because he still hasn't got the lung function or stamina to swim properly since he had covid. Yes hes not dead but his life has been seriously affected as have a lot of others.
And if there hadn't been lockdowns there would have been a much higher death rate as hospitals wouldn't have been able to treat everyone affected. Even though it would have been unlikely to affect me personally I'm not sure most people would have been comfortable with leaving people drowning in their own mucus in hospital corridors all over the country and only trying to save the young ones etc
