AIBU-Tom Cruise

Had a Tom Cruise film on in the background today as I was packing for holiday. It was Collateral on Netflix. It got me thinking about how amazing he was.

When I was a kid in the 80s he was the biggest movie star in the world. He has an amazing legacy that is somewhat tarnished by his association with Scientology.

I loved Cocktail as a kid. How can a genuine movie star just loose a big chunk of their reputation, was it the couch jumping I wonder….the lack of people around him who tell him the truth? I wonder if he sees his daughter?

He was amazing though, I’m not bu about that 😀

I find him so utterly creepy. Like a lizard got it’s one true wish to be a real man, and even though it’s walking around in its new man suit it’s still a lizard with no concept of human behaviour.

Although I’m not really keen on any of his movies, maybe if I was his creepiness wouldn’t bug me so much.

I don't think he has lost his reputation. Still being paid millions to make movies. Most likely the fact that he is getting older.

I can't watch any of his movies. Even before his scientology stuff, I've always found him annoying and creepy.

I love Tom Cruise. Graham Norton says he's his favourite celebrity because he's always so polite, helpful, never forgets the names of the staff and remembers details about them. He makes really enjoyable films. Yeah, I really like him.

Sorry, he's one I've never been able to stomach. And as for thinking he could play Reacher. . .

It's that cult so many of them seem to fall into that fucks them up.

Report
gobbynorthernbird · 24/07/2021 19:56

He's far too short to be Reacher.

Also, who the fuck decided he was heart-throb material?

Sometimes I reluctantly admit I like his films despite him being in it. He is fab with his fans too.

I always refer to the Top Gun sex scene as lizard lovemaking

I love Tom Cruise. He's a bit odd granted, but I enjoy his action movies immensely. The fact he does his own stunts as well I think gives him an edge over other action stars (I bet he's a bastard to get insurance on for his movies though)

I get a cock vibe from him. I think he'd straighten his cans and towels.

I liked Vanilla Sky.

Me too.
I remember reading that he is always late for sleb appearances and things because he insists on talking to fans for as long as they want to and doesn't leave till everyone has done their selfie etc.
Top Gun in all its absurdity got me through late 1986. Saw it 4 times.
I think the Scientology thing is nuts. I think he's gone into all of his relationships because it was what was expected of him.
I still love him even though he looks like Sandi Toksvig now. Grin

I quite fancy him… the Scientology is nuts. But no one is perfect! He does seems like a good guy.

The Scientology thing is just too creepy. I shudder at the sight of him now.

He was very charismatic and when i was younger i bought it, and he seemed less "constructed". He seems like a false persona now.

Plus, is he polite??? Didnt he yell for 10 minutes without pause at two crew members who just failed to maintain a distance of 2metres

He was heartbreakingly good in "Born on the 4th July"

Tom Cruise is that rare thing for me - a movie star who I can't stand in real life and who I think is problematic in many ways, but who makes films I still want to watch. It perplexes me because I'm usually zero tolerance on that sort of thing.

This is the best description of Tom Cruise ever! I think the Nicole Kidman divorce was the start. Followed by indoctrinating Katie Holmes into his cult. Now I just think he's a bit embarrassing. He must be 60 by now, but every time I've googled his age in the last decade, it still has him in his 50s. Confused. He basically pays to make his own movies now and despite being old, he always plays the action hero with women half his age pathetically fawning over him. This is why we have Mission Impossible 507 being made currently.

I'd also bet he's really grey but dyes his hair.

This is me too. I enjoy his films but have no interest in him. He doesn't seem like a nice person.

The jumping on the couch put me off, then the scientology it seemed like he was losing his mind.
I'm imagine his marriage to Nicole Kidman kept him and his secrets in place, wasn't there a gagging clause of some sort >>> off to Google.
Brilliant actor though

I really don't think he's a good guy.

I suspect he's in too deep with the Scientologists to leave now and is stuck with them. They get their converts to tell them every juicy piece of private gossip and scandal about themselves and aren't above using it to control their members. I think that is especially true for high profile people like TC.

I feel a tiny bit sorry for him, but he reaps what he sows as far as I'm concerned.
