To expect my sons teacher to get his name right?

My son has had the same teacher for 2 consecutive years - and she still spells his name wrong. It's not just spelt incorrectly - it's a different name. He gets quite upset about it. I have pointed out the mistake multiple times but had his school report and it's typed wrong again on it.

It's not a hard name either.

He's only got another few weeks of her, should I just let it go or do I send her another email?

Send it. That's terrible.

Send it. Really poor that the teacher doesn't know his name after 2 year.

How old is your son? Is he able to write a letter to the teacher explaining how upset he gets when she gets his name wrong? It might have more effect than an email from you.

Yes, she should get his name right especially on his school report. Are there any other students in your son’s class having the same problem with this teacher?

His primary class teacher (in which case that’s absolutely appalling) or a secondary school teacher of a minor subject who teaches several hundred children a week for about an hour a fortnight? Not that it really makes a difference. I’d have made a formal complaint ages ago. Everyone makes mistakes, but repeatedly making the same basic error after it’s been nicely brought to your attention multiple times is just not on.

I would probably be bloody-minded enough to send back the report and say they have given you someone else's report, as it doesn't have your son's name on it. But, I can be a stubborn bugger!

When I was at school my teacher told me off for correcting my name. Definitely send it, it's part of your son's identity.

Is say let it go in secondary school. Teachers have hundreds of kids names to remember and it is really tricky.

I have two utterly wonder girls in one of my classes and I still get them mixed up. They always get an apology and luckily for me are very forgiving.

Surely the report should have been proof read and that error pointed out...that is really awful! I would definitely contact them to tell them again and this is coming from a teacher, bit I am a stickler for getting names right

Definitely get it corrected on his report.

I'd do this too. I'd ask for a report for the correct child.

Could it be that the name being used is the name they have on file for him?
I’ve had a situation where the name on file, as per the child’s birth certificate, wasn’t their ‘known by’ name. On certain documents we had to use the birth certificate name though.

That’s so odd. Did you point it out to the actual teacher or to someone else to pass it on? Maybe the message got lost. Seems weird to keep making the same mistake like that, maybe she genuinely thinks that’s his name Confused

I would circle the mistake in red pen and make a comment like a teacher would on a pupils' incorrect work and say they must try harder and return it to them Wink

Speak to her one to one and if you don’t feel comfortable with this email her and say son is upset and could she make a mental note of the correct spelling. Also, let her know you would like a new report with the correct spelling of name so you can go through report with son. After two years how hard can it be jeez!

Crumbs that is shit.
I've spelt names wrong in books before and I've apologised straight away. I've taught so many Kai/Kye that I've often had to stop and think which one this is Blush

I’m 37 and still get called the wrong name. In school my friends would all shout out and correct the teacher when they were calling attendance(primary and secondary). No matter how many times I correct people, they still call me the other name. It’s very close, but it’s not my name. It’s not done me any harm whatsoever, hasn’t impacted my feelings of identity and whatnot but it is fucking irritating.

I went for a private scan the other week and even though I spelled my name correctly on my booking and corrected the sonographer when she called me the wrong name, the wrong name was still put on my scan picture 🤷🏽‍♀️ She was also the person who performed my NHS scan so I had met and corrected her before.

The office sends out the template for reports though. Maybe as someone else said the name on the front is down to them.
Pretty poor if his name is mis used inside too.

You say it’s a different name though? How would that occur?

I would correct it, not least because she might have him written down everywhere as that and it might get passed to his secondary school (I assume they send some stuff over?) who may continue to call him that name or not know which child it is about?

Report
StripyHorse · 03/07/2021 11:09

@Maireas

Weird. It can't be wrong on the report because it's generated by the registration system. (including image of said child) No-one "types it in"? anymore. Unless it's a small private school that's a bit behind with IT?

I have never written a report generated by the registration system - and have only worked in LEA schools.

Even it if was though, as the teacher I would be speaking up and correcting it.
