To ask what you consider “The North”?

Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

(In England) anything north of the midlands.

I would say anywhere from Sheffield upwards.

Cairngorms and above. Aberdeen, Inverness etc and above.

I’m from the Scottish central belt, so for me anything above Perth is about right.

I’m always amazed at how far south ‘the north’ starts for most people. York, for example, is firmly in ‘the North’ to most English people but it’s only a little over half way up England! I’ve seen Sheffield and Manchester described as Northern cities too

I know its wrong... but having grown up on the south coast pretty much north of oxford. I never really understood "midlands" and had the idea of south upto cambridge/oxford area, then "north" and "scotland" and "wales." Birmingham was definitely north .... I do now know that's not the case but it is in my head!

When I drove to Scotland once I realised there was a lot of "north!"

MishMash I'd still class Sheffield and Manchester as North!! Even when I considered moving there...

I’m from SE/London and I would definitely describe Manchester as the north probably anything above Milton Keynes to be honest

Anything north of the midlands as PP said. How we when I lived in the north east I considered anything south of York “the south”. It just seemed like anything below that line was so far away it had to be South, but then I didn’t even considered Manchester to be north (I don’t really know why and I do now). Living in the midlands now it’s like this area doesn’t exist it’s either north or south

In my head “the north” is above Nottingham. Above the midlands... but the north/south divide is often in reference to much lower and the midlands seems to become part of the north for that. Although the north:south divide is mainly used as London and Home Counties bashing. I don’t think people really take places like Cornwall into account (unless referencing holiday homes).
I think I’m waffling now...

Well I'd go so far as Watford Junction but after that it's all a bit up North

I think 'north' isn't just geographical, it's about outlook and history too. I'd also say anything from the Midlands up like a pp. I'm in Sheffield and count it as Northern - I'm originally from the Midlands and it's very different.
