Just a post about being a Northerner/Southerner which made me think - what do you consider as “The North”? I’ve never had a solid answer for this and just wanted to know the general census on this.

(In England) anything north of the midlands.

Letsgetreadytocrumble Sat 15-May-21 11:05:03

I would say anywhere from Sheffield upwards.

lovingllamaa Sat 15-May-21 11:05:05

Yorkshire and up

audweb Sat 15-May-21 11:05:13

Cairngorms and above. Aberdeen, Inverness etc and above.

I’m from the Scottish central belt, so for me anything above Perth is about right.

I’m always amazed at how far south ‘the north’ starts for most people. York, for example, is firmly in ‘the North’ to most English people but it’s only a little over half way up England! I’ve seen Sheffield and Manchester described as Northern cities too grin

I know its wrong... but having grown up on the south coast pretty much north of oxford. I never really understood "midlands" and had the idea of south upto cambridge/oxford area, then "north" and "scotland" and "wales." Birmingham was definitely north .... I do now know that's not the case but it is in my head!

When I drove to Scotland once I realised there was a lot of "north!"

NotAnotherPushyMum Sat 15-May-21 11:06:03

Northern England? Yorkshire, Lancashire upwards.

funnylittlefloozie Sat 15-May-21 11:06:21

Potters Bar and upwards. The North is a vast and sinister place.

SavingsQuestions Sat 15-May-21 11:06:48

MishMash I'd still class Sheffield and Manchester as North!! Even when I considered moving there...

FizzyPink Sat 15-May-21 11:06:55

I’m from SE/London and I would definitely describe Manchester as the north blush probably anything above Milton Keynes to be honest

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache Sat 15-May-21 11:06:59

Anything north of the midlands as PP said. How we when I lived in the north east I considered anything south of York “the south”. It just seemed like anything below that line was so far away it had to be South, but then I didn’t even considered Manchester to be north (I don’t really know why and I do now). Living in the midlands now it’s like this area doesn’t exist it’s either north or south grin

MiddleClassProblem Sat 15-May-21 11:07:16

In my head “the north” is above Nottingham. Above the midlands... but the north/south divide is often in reference to much lower and the midlands seems to become part of the north for that. Although the north:south divide is mainly used as London and Home Counties bashing. I don’t think people really take places like Cornwall into account (unless referencing holiday homes).
I think I’m waffling now...

SavingsQuestions Sat 15-May-21 11:07:45

@funnylittefloozie .... there be dragons...

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache Sat 15-May-21 11:08:03

Although I am assuming we’re just talking about England and not Scotland.

Meme69 Sat 15-May-21 11:09:02

Potters Bar and upwards. The North is a vast and sinister place.

Well I'd go so far as Watford Junction but after that it's all a bit up North

Branleuse Sat 15-May-21 11:09:53

Where east anglia level stops i think of as sort of north england

HunterHearstHelmsley Sat 15-May-21 11:10:24

Sheffield and up to me.

I'm from the Midlands and hate been told I'm from "the North". No. Just no.

RJnomore1 Sat 15-May-21 11:11:17

Aberdeen/Inverness for me too.

Anyone in England is a southern softie 😁

shouldistop Sat 15-May-21 11:11:25

Although I am assuming we’re just talking about England and not Scotland.

Aren't we always? wink

BigMamaFratelli Sat 15-May-21 11:11:35

I think 'north' isn't just geographical, it's about outlook and history too. I'd also say anything from the Midlands up like a pp. I'm in Sheffield and count it as Northern - I'm originally from the Midlands and it's very different.

Winkywonkydonkey Sat 15-May-21 11:11:59

Anything above Watford

Hairbrush123 Sat 15-May-21 11:12:02

I personally consider The North anything above Birmingham blush.
