AIBU?

AIBU to use the same baby name?

Expecting twin boys in a few months and my shortlist of names is only 4 names long.

My sister in law’s sister has taken 2 of the names fairly recently. I’ve only met her once, she lives very far away and probably will only see her and her children every few years if that, but it would leave my brother and sister in law as having two nephews with the same name, and their son with two cousins with the same name

That’s too weird right?

Names 3&4 have been vetoed for other reasons So I’m back to the drawing board. As if naming one child wasn’t difficult enough!

YABU: use the names you like and don’t worry about the other children
YANBU: you can’t use them, too weird

They will call the baby 'Fluffys Adam' or whatever the name is. I don't see a problem.

Congratulations Flowers

You'd be stuck in an Irish family where everyone is Patrick or Michael!

Use them, your SILs DSis has no impact whatsoever on your own family

Use the names you like it's not someone you will see often

Use the names. You don't even really know them. If they were your sisters kids then fair enough but you can't not use the names of every child of someone who knows someone who knows you.

I wouldn't think twice about using the names in the situation you've described.

So they children would have the same surname. I know some disagree and say cheerily ''your baby your decision!'' but I would go back to the drawing board. I'd feel a bit sorry for grandparents who had to explain that they have two gc called Patrick Smith.

I just realized that I don't actually know my sister in laws sister's kids names. I know name of the sister (have met few times) and that she has 2 kids.

Go for it. They are so far within the social circle/familiar relations that it does not matter.

If your that unsure talk to your sister in law about it. See if she would find it weird as she might not. My partners father and his step father both have the same name which consequently is my biological father's name. My father is not in my life but we get round it by the kids know them as grandad Robert and Rob. Could the cousins use a shortened version of the name to distinguish between them?

No different last names - it’s my brother’s wife’s sister Wife and sister are very close though

Thanks all!

It may feel rather odd for the grandparents when someone asks what their grandchildren are called.
I think I'd think of other names.

No it’s fine - it’s more than distant enough.

I can't remember the names of my sisters-in-laws' siblings, let alone their children. You don't even know these people!

So they children would have the same surname.

No they wouldn't, SILs sister. Even if this SIL is the OPs DHs sister then the other sister would also be his sister (confused) BUT one might assume they all had different husbands.

Even if the SIL is the OPs brothers wifes sister , still different surnames/.

Your sister in laws sister is not related to you! They won't have shared grandparents so I think it's fine Smile

Normally I wouldn’t like using the same name as someone close despite how everyone on MN seems to think it’s perfectly fine but in this situation I would definitely, my daughter has a very similar name to my nephews dads sister, (1 letter different) I couldn’t care less, I have no relationship with her and our kids have never met

I think it’s fine. My cousins had 2 cousins with the same name. They called them big Jake and little Jake to differentiate.

Completely fine. By coincidence, BIL’s 2 BILs have the same name (wife’s sisters DH and sister’s DH). Not confusing.

It’s fine.

I have three sets of cousins called (eg) Peter and Jane. Well, two sets of first cousins, and one set of second cousins, but of similar age. All maternal, shared grandparents etc. That’s a bit odd.
