AIBU?

John Barrowman put his dick on co-star's shoulder

John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness has (had?) been my all-time favourite Doctor Who character. I knew JB has a history of indecently exposing himself on set multiple times, but today I learned that he not only exposed his dick repeatedly but also non-consensually touched fellow actors with it -- like Camille Coduri (who played Rose Tyler's mum)!

AIBU to think that he got away with this only because he is gay? If he had been straight, wouldn't non-consensually putting his dick on his female co-star's body from behind have landed him loads of trouble already? I was utterly shocked to watch the video -- I don't know how I should be feeling after learning that my favourite Doctor Who actor behaved in this despicable manner. Shock

I mean...she doesn’t seem bothered? It’s all about context and if you’re in company who you know are ok with that kind of joke, then that’s fine. If people are not ok with it...not so much.

Context is everything

I used to really like him. Have gone right off him after hearing about this. It's obviously not as bad as Noel Clarke, but still disgusting behaviour really. I suspect Camille Thingy had little choice but to pretend she didn't mind and found it funny.

I suppose he thinks because he is gay that is his get-out clause. But it's not so much about sex as about power. He was one of the stars, she was less important, he could afford to be offensive and make others (women) uncomfortable, and they would be forced to laugh along or be thought of as 'difficult'. And maybe not get hired again.

Dickhead.

I think it's probably the case that people would be more accepting of this because he was gay, and they didn't perceive it as sexual as such, even if they thought it was in bad taste.

I have to say though, I think the other thing is that some sectors have this kind of thing happen more often than something like, say, office work, and film and theatre are one of them. It's a highly sexualised industry at times so people's barriers can be odd anyway, but also people spend a lot of time together, they are intimate (I don't mean sexually) in ways that aren't common in many work environments.

Not always, but some productions people can relate in general in a less than professional way.

This, exactly. @OwlBeThere Yes you are right that she doesn't seem bothered, but isn't that exactly what countless women have silently had to do? Faced with harassment and uncomfortable situations, women who are not in positions of power will often pretend they are okay so as not to displease their bosses/audience or risk losing their job/reputation. Just think: If Camille had protested on stage and expressed her discomfort at Noel Clarke's gross imitation of John Barrowman's conduct, she would likely have incurred the wrath of powerful (male) people like JB, the directors, etc immediately. She would have been branded as a spoilsport, loser, etc by people (esp JB's fans) and potentially lost out on new acting roles due to her unpopularity in the future! Indeed, silence and pretending to be okay would be her "safest" option as far as her career and reputation were concerned.

Rubbish. TV sets, production offices etc are all professional environments. People work there. Most of them jobbing actors and crew with no job security. Many of them junior. It’s very hard to “make a fuss” in those environments if senior staff don’t immediately stamp out inappropriate behaviour.

You don’t touch people with your naked genitals at work. Crazy that this even needs saying.

I hope Barrowman’s career is over. The industry doesn’t need his type.

What an amazing way to excuse sexual abuse. Your boundaries are set so low they don't even exist. Go you!

Exactly, and freelancers are famously always worried about where the next job is coming from. Even reasonably well known actors. So they keep schtum. Junior crew have even less clout.

He's well known for this behaviour apparently, particularly in musical theatre. Times have moved on.

Revolting man - he always gave me the ick. And yes I do think he gets away with it because he's gay and his targets are women. He's just a misogynist plain and simple.

I've disliked him ever since I saw him in Scotland near where I used to live. He was in a cafe with sunglasses on (in winter) looking like he was trying to be inconspicuous but ironically making a big show of trying to look inconspicuous. His boyfriend (husband?? 5 years ago or so) was warding off "fans" - or so he thought. I'd ordered a cappuccino and JB was next to the station for the stirrers and napkins. I went to get some and his boyfriend raised his hands and said "please do NOT bother John today, he is here to enjoy some private time". I was Hmm and said "actually I just wanted some napkins" and had to push past him. Pricks. Looking back I REALLY wish I'd said "who?" But I wasn't quick enough sadly.

No you're not being unreasonable at all, the fact that he hides behind his his sexuality to harass and abuse women really shouldn't give him an escape clause. But it does, as a gay man he has no interest in women. So his sexual abuse of women in plain sight is brushed off and excused.

I’ve never before seen or heard about this video! Pretty disgusting behaviour by JB (not commenting further on NC, who appears to be a proven predator and abuser.) IMO, completely unacceptable and previous pp are right - he’s only got away with it because he’s gay, it’s directed at women and therefore it’s been perceived as non-threatening. It isn’t non-threatening though, is it? Any workplace behaviour that makes anyone uncomfortable, in any setting, needs to be called out and dealt with. For too long, women have had to suffer and put up with this crap because, “I was trying to be polite/nice/no trouble/amenable/ employable.” Pure misogyny.

The theatre (and television sets) are very bizarre environments. I spent a good 20 years in both. You have to form a good team, for what often is intimate work, from day 1. You are at work from 6am until late some shoots; there is no room for the usual office politics. Day after day you may trawl across the country on location after location. You’re lucky if you can put down roots in a dressing room for a few days or weeks if your in a studio environment.

In the theatre you may have a Get In at 8am, tech rehearsal & a matinee & evening performance before you do a Get Out. Week long productions or even longer pantos are very hard work but blissful as you can do the same show over & over.

You bond quickly not only for the sake of getting a good performance, but for security as, especially on travelling plays or location shoots, you’re exposed emotionally, away from your home support networks. I’ve travelled the world in my ‘showbiz’ jobs. You need to support each other & have that support yourself. You have to let your guard down to form a bond in performance.

Couple that with the usual day to day things that are, by their nature, intimate (I’m not talking sexual scenes, but costume dressers, sharing spaces for changing, prosthetics & make up etc).

Add in the simple fact that to do these kind of jobs, as an actor or tech, you tend to be more ‘outgoing’, and in the secure environment you make together, and daft things can happen (I’ve seen more willies than you can shake a stick at, being wangled for comedy effect.

Before anyone storms in & claims this is a form of sexual assault, please listen carefully.

When I started that career in the theatre, as a part time tech, I had just turned 16. In the panto that year, I was sexually assaulted on an almost daily basis by one of the ‘stars’. Hands on groping, rubbing, touching intimate areas. One tech got trapped in a dressing room by another ‘star’ in the afternoon before a show & we had to break a fire glass to get everyone evacuated just to be able to get her, and him, out.

The man who attacked me is dead, thank goodness. My sister worked with me too & has had therapy to deal with her experience with him.

A gay guy wangling a Willy for daft (but stupid) comedy relief is miles apart from being sexually assaulted or harassed.

It is stupid and vulgar though.

I also trained as a drama teacher at 20. I’ve been both a performer & a tech. I’ve chaperoned kids around the world. I’m not a n00b in this world. I’ve also, in the past 5 years as my disability gets worse slogged 9-5 in an office (soul destroying) and I know which world is rather be in. Even with the wangling willies.

Of course, it isn’t appropriate. It’s childish behaviour (and herding a company of actors can be like stuffing fog in a bag sometimes). As an adult & teching as a stage manager, I’ve pulled actors aside for inappropriate behaviour. Heck, I’ve even been part of sacking one or two. But in an industry where the average day is 16hrs, and you work & play hard on occasion, stupid behaviour can happen.

Sexual behaviour needs to rooted out. I have complete sympathy with the victims of Noel Clarke. Some actors think they rule the roost & are invincible. They crave & demand attention (what other career do you get clapped at & praises by the public every day?).

I’m rambling. But you must understand it’s a weird, weird environment. I’ve seen both sides, and been assaulted along the way.

Dear god. These poor women having to work with these ghastly men and then laugh about it in public. Frankly I don't think it matters whether they appear 'fine' with it or what the workplace context is, this is sexualised misogynist bullying, both the original events and Noel's reenactment of it.

Another horrendous example of John Barrowman sexually harassing a co-star: This time he's fondling Eve Myles' (Gwen Cooper in Torchwood) breasts! You can see her actually trying to block one of his hands with her left hand which isn't holding the microphone. It happens from 1:30 onwards in the video:

Tardis This is nothing new nor has it ever been a secret - John has spoken of it at many comic cons as have co-stars (including him putting his cock in Eve Myles' hair rollers in Torchwood) and James Marsden had spoken of how he might knock him out if he was handsy with him but then went on to call him a consummate professional in their kissing scene and really supportive.
Barrowman is attention-seeking and whips it out a lot - including apologising to the beeb ages ago about a radio appearance. Should he be cancelled now? Should he have been cancelled back then?
Public court will decide. I still like the guy, sorry.

Ewwww. In the clip in the OP Noel Clarke is really enjoying talking about it and re-enacting it with the microphone isn't he? He's going on and on about it.

How can anyone describe JB as 'adorable' after that? Confused

I don't think you can excuse it by saying she doesn't sound bothered. The simple fact is she at no time consented to a penis on her shoulder, asked for it, or encouraged it. It simply shouldn't have ever been there. In an industry where you're not 'the star' being forced to accept that kind of behaviour is reported as not uncommon. His sexuality does not make it ok. It's still an abuse of power, regardless of what sex you are attracted to.

It sounds as if all this came out quite a long time ago and apparently he apologised in 2008 and changed his ways. has this all resurfaced again because of NC or did he not pack it in?

The clip you posted is vile. Shocking. So inappropriate. NC sexually abused those women on stage discussing JB. Yuk JB putting his dick on your shoulder and grabbing your tits, what’s there not to like? Ffs.
