Unless you are consummating the marriage during the ceremony, then it isn’t an adults only type of event

It's up to the people paying.

If it's your wedding it's exactly the type of event you want it to be, surely?

Each to their own, but I personally agree with you, OP. I always find child-free weddings a bit joyless! That said, the number of parents who don’t have the basic manners/brains to take their kids outside if they start screaming during the ceremony is fucking astounding, so I can see why people might prefer to ban them altogether!

Child free weddings are the dream if you have your own kids. Means you can party without them.

Kids at a wedding mean we have to act like adults. That’s boring. A night off from being a grown up would be lovely.

The venue takes 100. That’s 50 my side 50 DH’s.

If I invite couples that’s 25 people from my side plus their partners.

If they all bring 2 children that’s 12.5 people I can invite plus their families.

So out of 100 people attending I can only invite 12.5 of my closest family and friends.

Shall I pick which children I actually know/like? Or just say no to all children as that’s more fair.

I didn’t have a childless wedding, but it was a bit tricky on the numbers as I was late getting married so all my friends, cousins etc already had children. Luckily, enough people chose not to bring their children, and I loved the company of those children who did come along. But I wouldn’t be offended if someone else chose a child free wedding.

Kids at our wedding would have added 30 more to the guest list, most of whom I'd never even met. I don't especially like people's children so decided quite easily not to invite them. For the evening, anyone was welcome to have their kids along.

Its whatever type of event the bride and groom want it to be since they are the ones paying.

Yanbu at all. Children are people, part of families.

I don't get banning them.

Child free weddings are for people who want their friends as guests. Not small people who happen to be related to their friends.

Under current circumstances, I would just wish the couple well regardless of who was or wasn’t invited.

Personally think kids add something cute to a wedding, but if I were the Bride I can see that I wouldn't necessarily want every single one of my friends' kids there - as assuming the venue has a max capacity, or I have a limited budget, doing so would cut my adult guest list substantially. But I would like to have kids I am fond of; my nieces, nephews and others I know well and I wouldn't be too fussed about the occasional yell during the ceremony.

It isn’t banning them. It is choosing not to invite them.

My close friends now have over forty children between them. If I got married now it would be impossible to accommodate them all.

I’ve been to so many weddings where children have behaved appallingly and the parents have got too ratarsed to deal with it.

Who hasn't invited your kids to their wedding @DrunkPosting?

They're for people who have reason not to trust other people to parent their children responsibly, whether or not they like children themselves.

Sadly, they're often not wrong.

In other words, someone in your family is getting married and you've got yourself all excited about posting pictures on Faceache of little Noah and Olivia in their outfits, only to have your bubble well and truly burst.

Children are fun at weddings and provide joy! But it’s up to the paying couple

I get why people have this sort of wedding, I just wouldn’t. Went to loads of weddings as a kid and it was always great fun, can promise you the adults never saw us all evening, so we were no bother. We were all outside hanging out.

Mind you, in the 80’s/90’s you had weddings where it wasn’t £100+ a head, you just had a hall and a buffet, invite whoever you liked, done.

Knee slides on the dancefloor aren't everyone's cup of tea.
Invite kids & half the party leaves at 8pm.
Not every child is a pleasure.

YABU.
