AIBU?

. . . or is this a terrible finish?

We've just had our double glazing replaced. The photos below are one example of how badly the windows have been finished. They look worse than the old ones Sad

AIBU in asking him to come back and improve the finish? He's already not happy with me because he didn't take a rollerblind down and installed the window and beading around it, which meant there would be a chunk of beading missing when we replaced the visibly-old and crappy blind. He's also massively damaged the paintwork around the windows - much more than I expected.

It's also really awkward because he's a friend of DH's . . . ugh. That was probably our first mistake . . .

Is this normal? I honestly expected them to look nice and clean and new Sad

It’s atrocious, I wouldn’t pay.

Hi OP.
What are those dots in the top corner of the window on the 1st pic? Holes? Mould? Dirt?

That's really shoddy work, out of interest how much was he charging?

AWFUL. Shock

It wouldn't surprise me if the wind howled through the windows, and the rain poured in. (I hope it doesn't.)

I would call them back to put that right!

Um.. just paint over the sealant?! He's a window fitter, not a decorator, what do you want him to do?!

Window fitters don't usually make good around the windows a matter of course. I'd expect to decorate after getting new windows.

The only thing I’d wonder about is a possible gap in the first pic at the top left.
The rest is just what happens. Do you expect them to paint over where chips of paint have come off?

Are they new windows or 'used'? Zooming on the pics doesnt look good. Could be the picture quality of course.

He fits and seals the windows. You decorate.

I’d be fuming, they look like the before shot of a reveal!

The black marks in the corner are holes - I have no idea why they are there. It's as if he's drilled into them.

I'd expect the sealant to be smooth and neat, so that I could paint over it. It's in big lumps and clumps - it's just so messy.

Those windows don't look new and the finish is awful. I agree I would expect to do some touching up of the paintwork after having new windows fitted but that's beyond reasonable. Please tell us what he's charging you.

I’ve had similar damage when having windows replaced. They warned us in advance.

They certainly won’t repaint...

Report
MWMWMW · 07/05/2021 19:25

The holes I wouldn’t be happy with.

Sinner10 · 07/05/2021 19:25

Should you not of taken the blind down beforehand?

Report
MarthaJonesPhone · 07/05/2021 19:28

Those windows don't look new.

The making do is down to you, but the holes and state of the window units is unacceptable.

Drilling into the frame voids the warrenty so why has he drilled? It will also let the draft in! I would demand he replaces it x

I wouldn't be surprised about the paint work being damaged, I'd expect some
But your windows don't look new. Are they?

Dreadful! Last time I had new windows you literally couldn't tell he had been it was amazing. And those holes! Please say something.

I fully expected to touch up paintwork, but I didn't expect the sealant to be so messy and crusty. Shouldn't it be neat and smooth, rather than lumpy?

And yes, the windows are supposed to be new.

As for the blind, I asked him how he wanted me to prep the area, should I take blinds and curtains down etc., he said it's fine and that he would do it (there was only one blind and one pair of curtains in the windows that were being replaced).

The holes really worry me. Will it really void the warranty? Oh bloody hell Sad

How much is he charging? I would be loath to pay the full invoice. I suspect you are going to end up paying someone else to replace the windows again soon.

The walls around my windows were a mess after I had my new windows, this was for us to fix (decorate). But I am quite puzzled by your photos, as putting the decorating needs aside, nothing looks new, the colour of the frames is an off white like it was done twenty years ago.

Terrible. He needs to try again, as l could do way better. I say that as someone who is dyspraxic and not a tradesman.
