AIBU?

To think neighbour's behaviour is a bit odd?

... Or I'm probably just nosy and bored. My neighbours are a couple in their 30s (I'd guess.) I recently found out he's a successful former Intelligence Officer.

They are nice, friendly and helpful, though I can't help but sometimes feel there's something slightly off. They're quite private about their work, which is understandable. They frequently disappear for long periods of time (often weeks or months.) Whenever I speak to them, they often appear like they don't know what the other one is going on about, almost like they don't communicate about anything despite living in the same house (I know this is perfectly possible, though they seem a happy couple, so I don't see any reason why they wouldn't communicate much.)

Anyway, yesterday evening, an old housemate of mine appeared, using her old key to let herself in. Me and my boyfriend had some drinks with her. She's always been fond of the old herb so she was doing that and we were chatting and drinking for a few hours. When we went to bed I'd got five messages from my neighbour that had been deleted. I thought maybe she was complaining about noise but she messaged me back again today asking if we had weed up there and can I hook her up with a dealer Confused I said I don't smoke, but can send her the details of my old housemate. She kept being really eager asking if the girl would be coming back and when.

I'm confused by a couple of things

  1. I'm friendly with my neighbours, but not especially close. Is it a bit weird that she has asked me to put her in touch with a dealer.
  2. Is weed that hard to source in a big city?
  3. She told me that my housemate knows her under a different name. My housemate told me when she first moved in that she has a different name to the one I know her as. Her post etc. all comes under the name I know her as. I was curious about her job, but she doesn't have a LinkedIn profile. They barely ever go out as far as I can tell.

AIBU to think this is all quite odd?

Its not just your neighbours who are weird. Your ex housemate still has a key for your house and let's herself in?

Er, the 2 wierd things are knowing that he was a former spy and that your housemate happens to know your new neighbour but under another name.

Cool story though.

How did you know you had messages if they had been deleted. I'm confused.

Oh wow... I have so many questions! Yes your neighbour's behaviour is odd but so is your former housemate's, don't understand why she still has a key and lets herself in, also what is her connection with your neighbours, and why are you privy to the information about one of them being a former intelligence officer? Also, your neighbour seems overly keen to find this dealer, are they a narc? Grin

@Mamamia456 maybe they text via whatsapp. If someone deletes a message, it says "this message has been deleted" or along those lines, and it never fails to arouse my suspicion when that happens!

To clarify, this was on WhatsApp. Without being too outing, I know about him being an Intelligence Officer because it's info in the public domain. He does something slightly different now, though connected to his former work.

I didn't know my housemate still had a key. She's quite unpredictable. Someone was ringing on the door bell for ages and I decided to go and see if it was my neighbour as he'd recently been locked out. She'd let herself in and was standing in the hallway.

My old flatmate told me that my neighbour - let's say I call her Elsie, is actually named Julie. I thought this must be a mistake as my housemate was taking a lot of drugs at the time. However, today when asking for the contact details of my former flatmate, she knows me as Julie downstairs.

Just writing this down, I appreciate how confusing this sounds Confused

Do intelligence officers really put their job on public domain sites and tell you their real and alias names

And you invited her to stay instead of going “why the fuck have you let yourself into my house?!”

Cobblers.
No way would an Intelligence Officer publicise their information and even less go on line asking for drugs and dealers details.

Why was your friend ringing the if she had a key and had let herself in

Report
Riversidewriter28 · 04/05/2021 19:43

I think she rang so I had the chance to let her in. The doors between my flat and the hallway have had the locks changed, but the main door she still has the key for.

How much did you smoke?! This all sounds very weird and I'd stay out of whatever it is between your old housemate and the neighbour.

Say what now?

To clarify, my neighbour knows my old housemate from when she lived here. They did not like each other much though.

My neighbour also said she'd deleted all her messages due to poor spelling.

sounds a right crock of the proverbial tbh OP

If this is true then you need her key back and the locks changed, maybe mI5 could arrange this for you, it does all sound pretty unbelievable

Sparklesocks · 04/05/2021 20:08

Sorry what?
This feels like someone started writing a spy story then got distracted after smoking a joint halfway through.

Shes lying about the spelling obv.
