AIBU?

To think that a Rape Crisis centre should not have a transwoman CEO?

Mridhul Wadhwa has just been appointed CEO of Edinburgh Rape Crisis. The job was advertised as for women only. Mridhul is a transwoman (born male) without a Gender Recognition Certificate.

AIBU to think that women survivors of rape and sexual violence should be able to have a female only space?

I don't know anything about the individual in question, but I think a man could be a good CEO of a rape crisis centre, and a woman a poor one. Depends on the individual, their leadership skills, their background and experience, their empathy.

I take your point about advertising the job for women, but I'm not sure that being a transwoman invalidates her as a potentially good CEO.

They only have a self Id. They got their earlier job under a ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ (omitted to tell employer that they were legally male). Not honest, is it?

YABU to post here and not FWR which is really the proper place for yet another trans debate.

@JammyGem

Oh give over.

She is a woman, she'll be perfectly fine at the job.

This person is not a woman either in a biological or a legal sense.

I don't see the issue with the CEO being male as will not be dealing with the wine directly but think that women should be allowed to request things like counselling to be female only.

Wine=women

What I do have an issue with is this person does not agree that women should be allowed female only services and spaces and will be influencing policy not only for this centre but government policy.

If a job has been advertised specifically for women and only women, I presume there is a reason for that.

Do you have to be a woman to be a good ceo? No
Does it matter then? No

Simple as that.

Starts with a CEO and then a slippery slope to biological men being employed as rape counsellors. And poor women being expected to talk through their rapes with a man. Nice.

Did they specify the role was open only to women? Yes

Fine, Owl, but the job was specifically advertised for women only.

I understand this person was previously a rape counsellor, Covid.

Wadhwa does not recognise themselves as a man. Fine. They are trans. Fine. They do not recognise that women and girls deserve a female only sex space. Not fine. Especially as this is within the role of a rape crisis centre.

Also this person has talked in the press about women orgasming while being raped, which I find highly in appropriate and very suspect.

Totally ignoring this particular issue (which I don’t think is an issue). Why should Men not also be able to avail of RCC services. Men can and do get raped and deserve all the supports that are available for women. Besides group therapy, nearly all services are on an individual basis anyway. In my local RCC, all services are for people who have been assaulted and the only reference to gender is in regards to group therapy. I would be horrified to think that men could be turned away and not receive the supports I was offered after my assault.

I think she was an excellent choice for CEO, best of luck to her.

And by the way, @Graffitiqueen, sometimes people do orgasm during rape and sexual assault. It doesn't invalidated them, their experience or what they do after. People who have been raped are not inappropriate.

It's not an issue. She'll be an excellent CEO. YABU, however, for bringing your trans-bashing out of the Feminism boards. And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so. MN isn't just for transphobes.

Imagine, just imagine, ringing a Rape Crisis line, and a man's voice answering.

Those saying what a great choice - they are legally male, the job was specifically for women (for a reason). How do you square that?

As always. Female rights being trodden over so as not to tread on the rights of TransFemale. No I don’t use CIS either. I’m not changing who I am or how I categorise myself to appease anyone.
I have no issue in most other circumstances, this was a clear case of lying to reach a position they would not have been appointed was the truth known.

I saw this on Twitter earlier.

Absolutely horrendous. Although in Scotland a lot of our politicians are fully on board with "a woman is anyone who says they are a woman" bollocks. Who loses? Women who have been raped and are at the most vulnerable point of their lives.

They don't matter though, do they? Only the feelings and career of this man matter.
