To be a bit peed off next door neighbour has painted the trellis above the garden fence?

We only moved into this house 8 months ago so this is our first summer here. The fence is 5ft heigh with garden trellis above taking it to about 6ft.

I've been pondering what colour to paint our side of the fence, it's currently a faded orange and needs doing again. I was thinking about either pale grey or cream.

Yesterday (when we were out) without even mentioning it to us my next door neighbour removed all the trellis and put a fresh coat of orange fence paint on both sides of the trellis so now it seems I'm stuck with the orange fence unless I want an argument (we've been told these neighbours can be v difficult). Am I being unreasonable to be a bit pissed off about it and should I paint the fence and trellis the colour I really want or just put up with it as it is?

shock

Who owns the fence?

If its their trellis they can do what they like.... Stick some trellis up on your side and paint it whatever colour you like perhaps

HercwasanEnemyofEducation Mon 19-Apr-21 15:00:51

Whose trellis is it?

PinkCookie11 Mon 19-Apr-21 15:00:55

Just paint your side what colour you want!
It’s on your side aswell so do what you wish with your side

YellowFish1647 Mon 19-Apr-21 15:01:12

Can’t you just repaint your side? We have a trellis on top of ours - our side is grey, neighbour’s is a much darker grey.

Soontobe60 Mon 19-Apr-21 15:01:59

If you own the fence put up your own trellis . If not, put up your own fence that goes as high as allowed (2m ). We’ve just done this!

ShirleyPhallus Mon 19-Apr-21 15:02:38

In the name of neighbourly relations, they might have spoken to you. But if they own the fence, they can do as they like. I’d get one that’s the same size and paint it the colour I want, or go over and ask them if it’s ok for you to paint your side whatever colour you want

I think you’re pretty unreasonable to be annoyed at them when 1, the fence was already orange when you moved in and 2, you’re annoyed at them from someone else telling you that they’re unreasonable, not by going to speak to them directly

YANBU. Irrelevant who owns the fence, you can paint your side whatever colour you want. It is gonna be tricky to paint a trellis a different colour both sides though, presumably why your neighbour took it down to paint it, to protect the wood.
If you are skilled and careful it should be fine. I'd make a bags of it despite best efforts.

If the neighbour owns the fence, you can't paint it without their permission

mummabubs Mon 19-Apr-21 15:06:36

I think as others say it depends who owns the fence? When you bought the house there should have been an indication as to which side of the garden boundary you're responsible for and which is your neighbour's. (eg for us our neighbour is responsible for the fence running along the left side of the boundary and we are for the right). You're not unreasonable to dislike the colour and could always ask if they'd mind you carefully painting the side that's facing your garden but if it's their boundary you might have no choice! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Er, no. You can't.

Neome Mon 19-Apr-21 15:07:52

This is not a trellis, it a fork in the road.

Don’t be the desperate seller thinking “If only we’d put up our own trellis all those years ago 😉

emilyfrost Mon 19-Apr-21 15:08:18

YABU if it’s their fence; they can paint both sides whatever colour they want because it’s theirs.

StormyLovesOdd Mon 19-Apr-21 15:08:53

We own the fence and trellis one side but their garden is bigger than ours so they own the fence and trellis at the bottom of our garden. It's a complicated set up 😂. Can't really put more trellis up as the trellis is thick and sits on top of the fence.

I'm sure if we paint our side of the trellis and the different colour ran through the gaps and down their side of the fence they would not be happy and would pick a argument, they're very fussy. I really don't like the orange but at the same time I'm not sure it's worth the arguments it's bound to cause

You can't paint someone else's property whatever colour you want 🙄

You will need to put your own one up if you don't like the colour they've chosen for their fence

LeroyJenkinssss Mon 19-Apr-21 15:09:25

Do not just paint the fence unless you know its yours! I’d be surprised if it wasn’t theirs, because otherwise why would they go to all that trouble? Also you cant just attach trellis if it’s their fence.

Rosewood017 Mon 19-Apr-21 15:10:57

Could you grow some climbers over it to cover it up? A nice big rose bush or passion flowers perhaps?

LeroyJenkinssss Mon 19-Apr-21 15:10:59

I dont think being bothered by paint run makes them “very fussy”. So the trellis that they have painted - is that yours or theirs?

No you cannot

It is criminal damage though the police won't get involved.

If you are lucky because the fence is a few years old they will have a go at you and not do anything but neighbourly relations will be strained.

If the fence was newly put up they can ask you to pay for it to be repainted up to a replacement, and take you to the small claims court if you refuse.

HandlebarLadyTash Mon 19-Apr-21 15:13:13

I would plant some shrubs to make hedge I wouldn't want to make eye contact over the 5ft fence with neighbours

StormyLovesOdd Mon 19-Apr-21 15:13:46

The side between the two gardens is our fence, the fence that runs along the bottom of our garden is their fence

Surely it's an unwritten rule that you can't just decide what colour your neighbours side of the fence is, even if you do own it.

They should have asked if you liked that colour and if not at least given you the chance to paint your side with a colour of your choice at your expense?

It might be legally theirs but the colour your side doesn't effect them at all so why be so bloody minded about painting it "their" colour.

StormyLovesOdd Mon 19-Apr-21 15:15:29

Luckily I'm short so don't need to worry about making eye contact grin. The more I think about it the more I think it's not worth it

Have they painted your bit of the fence and trellis?

If yes, I would speak to them and say as they have painted your fence, you will paint your side of their fence to a colour of your choosing.

Get it in writing. If they refuse paint the trellis you own on both sides and leaves the trellis they own.
