AIBU?

Should I be upset at paying £300 for haircut

Hi ladies,
Have waited 7 months to get my hair done and finally went today. I got a full head of balayage highlights, a root tint to cover my greys and a cut and blow dry. The website was really unclear and it said £130 for a full head of balayage. Knowing sometimes that hairdressers add optional extras I budgeted £180 just in case. I got to the till, the receptionist seemed awkward, didn't confirm the price straightaway, so I asked her what it was, and £300 appeared on the credit card machine. I can only guess that she didn't say the figure out loud because she was embarrassed to charge me that much. I didn't want to say too much in front of a full salon full of people but I simply said "wow that's expensive?" She shrugged and didn't say anything but "your e-receipt will be sent directly to you". I thought I'd best pay and then query the receipt later as I already felt so embarrassed and caught off guard.

Looking at the receipt they have charged me for:
£130 full head of balayage
£65 full head of permanent colour
£65 ladies cut and finish
£35 olaplex
£5 tip
Total: £300

Am I right to be completely shocked at the price of this?? It did take 4 hours and I have long thick hair but really? Have you ever heard of a haircut this expensive and fellow hair stylists, does this price sound reasonable to you?

Needless to say I have sent Rush an email but am I being unreasonable questioning the price of this haircut?

Why on earth did you pay it? That's insane!

To me that seems absolutely ridiculous!! (but you'll probably have people comment and say they regularly pay £400 for a cut and blow dry 🤷‍♀️)

I've never paid more than £65 for a cut/colour and to be honest I was shocked at that price

Hopefully it looks nice?! Grin

Insane! I certainly would have said something. They've really taken the piss.

How are they charging for a full head of balayage AND a full head of permanent colour?!

Did they ask you if you wanted the Olaplex treatment?

That's an obscene amount to spend on a hair do. I presume the price is inflated because it's some kind of branded salon?

My word you have been well and truly ripped off! And the cheek to charge you £5 for a tip!!!!! Name and shame.

SoddingWeddings - I know, I am kicking myself for not starting a fuss there and then but I was so caught off guard and so embarrassed!! I thought I'd query it later but now I really really wish I'd said something there and then!! I should have added that I got this haircut in Liverpool Street in central London so I suspect that's also added to the cost 🤦🏻‍♀️ That's my iPad fund gone! 😩

That is ridiculous, there's no way I would have paid that.

I paid £140 once and winced. I tend to do my own now even though I can afford it. I must be a tight arse I think 🤷‍♀️

YANBU and you have my sympathy!

That is mental. Even the cost of the cut seems steep. I think that is probably the cost of my haircuts for the last 10 years put together Grin

I feel like if they are going to charge that much they need to tell you up front. I hope it looks bloody awesome

Pish like this made me embrace the grey.

I hope you are thrilled with it, because I would need to be for £300...

£150 would be enough imo, but I detest hairdressers in general. I’ve paid around £80 for a great cut with an award winning London based hairdresser so unless yours is really top notch I think it’s very expensive

The only reasonable bit was the tip Shock

I hadn't heard of Rush until there was a thread complaining about them recently, is there more then one branch?

They charged you the tip without you offering one? Everything else aside that’s fucking awful.

Does it look good? I’d want to come out looking like Claudia Schaffer for that price.

Yanbu. They should have been upfront. Because you are right, it is so difficult to say something then and there, even if we 'should'.

Totally flummoxed how it could ever cost so much, it’s almost a months mortgage payment for us! Absolute madness, you really shouldn’t have paid it.

Horehound · 16/04/2021 22:25

I think they shouldn't have added on the permanent colour if you were charged full head balyage
You can't have two full heads it should be half and half if that's how they want to do it!!

I just got a great haircut, colour and blow-dry for £60. Best I've had in years!

That's ridiculous. I understand what you mean about the embarrassment though, I had similar this week when I went for an eye appointment only to be asked for £480 for test and glasses. the optical assistant looked embarrassed and didn't know what to say when I said I wasn't buying.
Do you think they have increased prices to recuperate loses over the past year ?

jazzandh · 16/04/2021 22:25

Well, I would query the full head of permanent colour for a start. Did you have that or not?

I would also query the olaplex if they didn't ask you if you wanted that!

My hairdresser has increased since covid, as they only have one client at a time, so you end up paying for the dead time while your colour is taking!

That's pretty annoying as well ( paying nearly twice the price for colour) _ I just don't go as often (especially as there hasn't been anywhere much to go to in the last year!!)

Why didn't you ask the price if it was unclear? It sounds reasonable to me when it's broken down like that (and you already knew the most expensive element).

I had to pay 90 quid for lowlights once and it really pissed me off. I've never had more than cut & bd since, and that's 45 quid...

I’d queerly the olaplex, if you didn’t ask for it. Other than that, it’s a lot of money, but you presumably received all those services so why would you expect to only be charged for the £130 balayage? I don’t know much about colouring but presume the permanent root tint is a separate service and product to the balayage colouring? If not and you’d usually get the former included with the latter than query that.
