Fantasising about a fictional character!!

I need your help and to know if I am a complete lunatic and BVU or if this is something that happens to other people.

I have always had a very overactive imagination and have a tendancy to daydream but this is the first time (in adulthood anyway) that I have developed a full on obsession with a fictional character. Not the actor who plays this character, but the character himself! Last night I found myself googling this character and falling into the rabbit hole of the Internet and finding reams of erotic fan fiction. I am ashamed to say I found myself still awake at 2am after reading through tons these short stories Blush call me niave but I had no idea this stuff existed before! I feel such a dork!

Am I abnormal? What does this say about this verging on middle-aged married mother? My marriage and sex life are good, I love my husband and find him very attractive, I don't feel depressed or lonely. What is going on?! Grin

Isn’t that what fiction is for? To give us an imaginary world to inhabit?

You need to tell us who it is. Don't leave us hanging!

I am in love with Klaus Mikaelson who is a fictional character and a mythical creature!

Well I'm the reverse, I always have a celebrity crush on the go. I watch them act the different characters but it's always the actor I'm crushing on, not the character.

You are soooo going to have to tell us who it is though. Can't tell us half a story!

I hope its normal because I've always crushed on fictional characters rather than the actor who plays them. Usually ill eventually see an interview of the actor as their real sleeves and the illusion gets quickly shattered. I not sure what it is but I find something really off-putting about hearing actors describe their work.
Tell is who it is!

It could be maladaptive daydreaming but the existence of the fan fiction shows you that it’s not uncommon.

Ha! Same! Though I’ve re-read the Rutshire trilogy over lockdown and oh my they haven’t aged too well. I still love though.

Well someone has hit the nail on the head already. It's Severus Snape! Blush literally would in heartbeat!

I didn't want to say who because I thought it was less acceptable than a character like Aragorn or similar.

I feel relieved to know I'm not alone!! I knew mumsnet would help me out as always Grin

Now I'm excited to read everyone else's fictional crushes! Keep them coming...

Having a crush on a celebrity isn’t much different to having one on a fictional character imo, it’s just a character created in a different way, it’s not like you know the real person.

I thought I’d grown out of this at pushing 60, but dismayed to find I haven’t and have an obsession with a character from a TV series AND a crush on the actor that played him.

All fantasies are fiction. When you fantasise about a real person it's not really 'them', it's the fantasy version of them you've got in your head. So no, it's fine :).

I'll just go and continue fantasising about Steve Arnott now..
