AIBU?

AIBU to think you can't make lasagne with raw mince?

I had a mild debate with a friend today who says you don't need to cook/brown the meat before you put it in the lasagne. She would do pasta sheets, white sauce, tomato basil sauce from a jar, raw minced beef, in layers.

I do it the normal way, cooking a tomatoey meat sauce first and layering that with bechamel and pasta sheets. She said using raw meat is a perfectly legitimate time saver and tastes fine.

I can't get my head around this, and wondering whether anyone else does it this way?

I've always done it your way. I think the meat would be a bit chewy if not pre-cooked

Not gonna harm you but I bet it doesn’t taste as nice as yours!

I don’t see why you couldn’t, as the meat would just cook in the oven but the best part of a lasagne in a thick, rich ragu which you wouldn’t get like that. Plus wouldn’t it also end up making the pasta sheets quite greasy?

I see her logic, much like some people put raw mince into slow cookers without browning first. I would never ever think to cook a lasagne her way though, they should be a labour of love!

That's mad! Has she had a lasagne before (aside from her own)?

Well it would be cooked but chewy!

Everyday my firm belief that you really can't just eat in anyone's house is confirmed!!!

Well on a technical level you could.

But on a favour level it would be awful

Hers won’t cause you harm but I can’t imagine it tastes nice!

It'd be really greasy, heartburn on a plate!

Her way sounds absolutely grim.

But you need to make a good bolognese first and let it simmer. Before making the lasagne

Bet that's one chewy lasagne she's making!

Sounds disgusting. People who do this can't cook really. Dumping things together is not cooking.

You could - but it would be absolutely tasteless.

Sounds weird, and annoying to have to try and evenly spread out raw mince across the dish surely?

Sauce from a jar tells me your pal is no Delia OP.😉

I’m a lazy arse but even I would brown the mean and cook with a sauce first.

Grim.

Making a good ragu is 90% of what makes the lasagne great

Raw mince and a jar of sauce?? She may as well just buy a ready meal lasagne. Probably tastes better.

You lost me at jar of sauce

It would not look nice IMO.
But I do tend to cook my mince add sauce and then leave for overnight to marinate. Then make my lasagna or spag bog.

Yuck! I’m having lasagna for dinner tonight and the ragu will be simmering for a good couple of hours on the hob beforehand.
