AIBU to think you can't make lasagne with raw mince?

I had a mild debate with a friend today who says you don't need to cook/brown the meat before you put it in the lasagne. She would do pasta sheets, white sauce, tomato basil sauce from a jar, raw minced beef, in layers.

I do it the normal way, cooking a tomatoey meat sauce first and layering that with bechamel and pasta sheets. She said using raw meat is a perfectly legitimate time saver and tastes fine.

I can't get my head around this, and wondering whether anyone else does it this way?

I've always done it your way. I think the meat would be a bit chewy if not pre-cooked

TheFuckingDogs Tue 13-Apr-21 12:27:52

Not gonna harm you but I bet it doesn’t taste as nice as yours!

TrialOfStyle Tue 13-Apr-21 12:28:04

I don’t see why you couldn’t, as the meat would just cook in the oven but the best part of a lasagne in a thick, rich ragu which you wouldn’t get like that. Plus wouldn’t it also end up making the pasta sheets quite greasy?

I see her logic, much like some people put raw mince into slow cookers without browning first. I would never ever think to cook a lasagne her way though, they should be a labour of love!

That's mad! Has she had a lasagne before (aside from her own)?

AnnaMagnani Tue 13-Apr-21 12:30:14

Well it would be cooked but chewy!

VladmirsPoutine Tue 13-Apr-21 12:32:33

Everyday my firm belief that you really can't just eat in anyone's house is confirmed!!!

Whatwouldscullydo Tue 13-Apr-21 12:33:56

Well on a technical level you could.

But on a favour level it would be awful

OolieMacdoolie Tue 13-Apr-21 12:34:51

Hers won’t cause you harm but I can’t imagine it tastes nice!

SpookySonne Tue 13-Apr-21 12:35:36

It'd be really greasy, heartburn on a plate!

Honeybobbin Tue 13-Apr-21 12:36:55

Eeew!!! That would be utterly disgusting!

bridgetreilly Tue 13-Apr-21 12:39:51

Her way sounds absolutely grim.

Hankunamatata Tue 13-Apr-21 12:40:03

But you need to make a good bolognese first and let it simmer. Before making the lasagne

Nellle Tue 13-Apr-21 12:41:12

Bet that's one chewy lasagne she's making!

AmyLou100 Tue 13-Apr-21 12:42:05

Sounds disgusting. People who do this can't cook really. Dumping things together is not cooking.

Wingedharpy Tue 13-Apr-21 12:42:50

You could - but it would be absolutely tasteless.

ChristinaYang10 Tue 13-Apr-21 12:43:23

Sounds weird, and annoying to have to try and evenly spread out raw mince across the dish surely?

Wingedharpy Tue 13-Apr-21 12:44:14

Sauce from a jar tells me your pal is no Delia OP.😉

Twickerhun Tue 13-Apr-21 12:44:26

I’m a lazy arse but even I would brown the mean and cook with a sauce first.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz Tue 13-Apr-21 12:44:44

Grim.

Making a good ragu is 90% of what makes the lasagne great

Raw mince and a jar of sauce?? She may as well just buy a ready meal lasagne. Probably tastes better.

TheChineseChicken Tue 13-Apr-21 12:45:14

You lost me at jar of sauce

Bargebill19 Tue 13-Apr-21 12:46:39

It would not look nice IMO.
But I do tend to cook my mince add sauce and then leave for overnight to marinate. Then make my lasagna or spag bog.

Queenoftheashes Tue 13-Apr-21 12:47:30

Christ that’s gross

MangosteenSoda Tue 13-Apr-21 12:47:57

Is she sinister and deviant in other ways too grin
