People buying their 18 year olds brand new cars??

Neighbours have just bought their daughter a brand new 21 plate Mercedes hatchback straight from the factory.... very happy for her and is a hardworking girl doing a very good course at a demanding London university but AIBU to be very shocked??!! They are fairly well off but not wealthy wealthy. Have bought in cash and not financed but I am shocked as this seems to be the done thing nowadays (buying child nearly new/new car). Have you done this and if so, why? Is there an advantage to giving your child a fairly expensive new car? I’d love to be in a similar position in the future with my own kids, but I’m not sure it’s a good idea!
