AIBU?

I walked out on my job tonight!

Literally that. I can't believe it really. Half way through my shift I literally walked out. Phoned my supervisor to explain why. I was so angry at my colleagues I just couldn't stay so I walked out. Phoned my supervisor driving home and explained everything. She said she'd speak to my colleagues and call me on Monday. But as far as I'm concerned now, especially after tonight, I can't go back. I can't work with them anymore. Especially after bloody walking out and complaining to our supervisor about them. If I go back, it'll just be ten times worse. I can't. But I need a job. Can't get my head around it.

Why were you so angry with them?

What did your colleagues do?

You're right, you can't go back after this. No matter what they do or say, the ship has sailed. Whatever the problem was, focus on the future. It's easy to get rose-tinted about a job once you've left - try not to do this. You left for a good reason, I'm sure. Start looking for a new, better job tomorrow. That's how to move on.

Oh, sorry, that is a horrible experience to go through. Flowers

I'd have a drink - gin, camomile tea, whatever - and concentrate on trying to wind down. Tomorrow can be sorted tomorrow.

It's so unlike me to do this. I'm quiet and shy by nature but I had a breakdown in the Summer and was off work for months and months. I'm on Anti Ds now that have changed my life but they've also changed me. Since I started there, there's always been an atmosphere of them v me. I'm the newest, they are closer in age to each other, etc. But they are so slow and they waste so much time doing stuff that doesn't need doing and it means we end up working unpaid overtime. This evening it all got too much, it's bloody Saturday afternoon and I just want to get done and get back to my family, I'm slogging away trying to get finished and I noticed they've disappeared, I went to find them and they were doing work but it was work that didn't need doing. Completely unnecessary. I checked the time and explained that we were running well behind and wouldn'tbe finished in time. They basically laughed at me and blew me off. So I walked out. I'm sick of it and I've had enough of people taking advantage of the fact that I'll do the heavy lifting and pick up their slack. I refuse to be walked all over anymore.

Yabu if you need a job. We all work with people that can be difficult. You need to grow up and block them out.

Tonight was basically the nail in the coffin after months worth of crap. They whisper behind my back. It's all very playground them on one side and me on the other. And I'm sick to death of getting home late every day because they slack and leave the bulk of it to me.

Have you raised this problem with management before?

Report
SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/03/2021 20:31

I think possibly it could have been handled better and not just resulted in a storming out. Won’t you need a reference?

I walked out on a job once but I did go back, manager agreed it wasn't my fault and I was completely in the right Blush
I was only 17 at the time

I have actually posted a thread about them before but under a NC. It just never ends.

Management is pretty terrible tbh. Very unprofessional. Never get back to you about anything. But no it's not been raised before. I've just tried to get on with it.

Yeah, I know. Honestly it was so out of character for me. I'm an introvert, hate conflict. A rule follower. Head down. That sort of thing. Still reeling that I walked out.

You did the right thing! I know it's hard right now, but I'm hoping that your manager has your back and tells your colleagues to pull their socks up! If you feel able I really hope you can go back.

I think I remember your original thread, are you a cleaner and working two locations due to Covid or something along those lines?

Have you not left yourself open to disciplinary action for walking out mid shift?

In that case I'd sack you if I were your manager.

Staff can't just take it upon themselves to walk out when a problem they've never reported gets too much.
