To think you are either in or out?

My ex has decided to stop seeing our children, he hasn’t bothered in months and it’s been excuse after excuse but it’s becoming clear that he just doesn’t want to see them. Fair enough, he’s done this before, he’s always been in and out and seems to struggle with seeing them. Anyway the thing I don’t get is he seems to want to stay in contact with me but not see them, so he will text me now and again asking how they are but never asking to actually see them or speak to them. At first I responded but it is becoming clear he’s only doing it for his own guilt as he never asked anything about them just a “how are they” I respond saying they are fine and that’s it doesn’t ask anything about them or what they are up to. It’s my sons birthday in 2 weeks and I’ve just had a text from him saying that he has sent a present and a card, so obviously making it clear he has not intention to actually see him for his birthday. Aibu to think you can’t expect to be a dad from a distance? Surely you are either in or out? It’s confusing for my children and I don’t really want to remain in contact with him if he doesn’t want to see them.
