AIBU?

Reusing sons name for new baby

My ExP is having a baby with his partner. All is well, we get along great and I am really happy for them and excited for DS that he will soon have a baby brother.

We were chatting about names this morning and he mentioned some that he is thinking of for the new baby, but he is reusing DS middle name as a middle name for the new baby. So say our son is Daniel Jack, the new baby will be called Thomas Jack (not the actual names).

AIBU to think it's slightly weird? Doesn't affect my life in any way shape or form, it's not an issue, just wondered if people agree with me or wether it's a normal thing to do.

Yes I am bored and nope I am lucky enough to not have much else to worry about right now.

It’s a middle name. It will never be used. Dont give it a second thought.

I think it’s quite a nice link between the brothers 🤷‍♀️

I don't think it is weird, often middle names are familial.

Is it a 'family name'? If yes, I think fine. I went to school with a girl whose family all had the same middlename for this reason. If not, I think it's odd and possibly upsetting for DS?

Middle names wouldn’t bother me in the slightest

Both my sons have the same middle name.

No problem at all.

Agree it is quite a nice link between the brothers but I do see how you might have been taken aback by the news.

i don’t think it’s weird at all. no one really uses middle names anyway. me, my brother, and my sister all have sons with the same middle name. i think it’s a nice link between them all.

Seems it's a fairly common occurrence then, I just thought he had no imagination!

I wouldn't dream of commenting, it's none of my business after all.

My little half-sister's name is my middle name, I don't mind at all.

I honestly don’t think anyone will even know apart from you and the boys themselves. It’s not going to cause any confusion.

Prince William and Kate have reused their first son’s middle name as their third son’s first name. The whole world knows about that, yet it doesn’t seem to have caused any major issues.

No, its not particularly weird. There are lots of names that have been reused in both my family and DH's. I think my DD is the first female in for centuries not to have a particular name included in fact.
I wouldn't give it a second thought.

We have the whole all first born cousins have the same name thing going on which is quite common, it only threw me because they are siblings.

I think you have all convinced me that it's a nice link between them. I hadn't thought of it like that.

I had three cousins who all shared the same two middle names - why not!
It also meant their initials spelt rhyming words - I'm not sure that was such a good idea!

It is quite nice really :)

On the other hand I have a friend named Sarah Jackson (not really...) whose Dad fucked off when she was about 10. He resurfaced when she was at uni, he had remarried and had another daughter. Also named Sarah Jackson.

Now that is cold.

Not remotely weird. Especially if it’s a family name. My Father had 4 cousins with the same first name as him as it was a family name (2 had the same surname as well!).

The royals have done this more than once. As well as the example of Prince George, Prince Andrew has Edward as one of his middle names. And I have no idea how I know that but just checked and it’s true.

I know someone whose Dad did similar. Apparently her step-mum had always been going to call her a first daughter after her granny and resolutely stuck to that, even though her DSD who lived with her, had the same name.

The first daughter was always known by her full name, but it got shortened during the pregnancy and the new baby got a short version too.

So they had a Libby & Beth/ kitty & Cathy/Alex & Lexi type of name set-up. The couple involved were somehow surprised when the elder DD moved back in with her mum and gradually lost contact.

Wouldn't bother me. My husbands first name is the same as his brothers middle name.

Could be also be a family name from her side?

Middle name wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

One of my distant relatives named his first son after himself, then got divorced, had another son and gave him exactly the same name - first, middle and surname. It was as if the first one had never existed!

My friends 3 boys all have their dads name as their middle name. Which may give you a bit of an idea what her husband is like Grin
