AIBU?

To be really emotional that tomorrow we will have a female Vice President?

Everything has been so awful recently that I've kind of overlooked how momentous this is.

Go Kamala Harris and the Biden administration. 🇺🇸

I hope theirs is a force for change and renewal and decency and fairness.

How long do you think Creepy Old Uncle Joe will last? Then you can celebrate a female President.

"We will have"?

Not here.

And Thatcher was a woman.......

TesticleMarmalade · 19/01/2021 21:55

Eh. As soon as they usher in legalisation that erases the ability use woman to describe, well, women, I’m sure you’ll be singing a different tune.

...and that's that bubble burst then! Thanks people 😐.

All of the above are valid points, obviously, but ; you have to admit it's a great milestone for women and girls all over the world? Surely you can muster a tiny bit of excitement for that?

Not ‘our’ Vice President. Are you an actual American or just confused?

I think it’s wonderful OP. I don’t need to be an American to think this.

@Ritasueandbobtoo9 er, I am a bit confused by your post, yes. Sorry! I am half American if that helps. But don't live there right now.

This IDPOL stack is why Trump won initially, he was a symptom not a cause, Harris has come out with a lot of bad politics, just because she owns a vagina doesn't make her invinsibile.

It's as momentus for being behind Thatcher, Merkel, Ardern, May et al, but it's just another idpol stack where people are sowing the seed that any critisim will be met with calls of being mysognisitic. Pretending that America is the first to do anything is not only simplistic but lacks any kind of critical thinking.

As for Go Team Biden, I presume you are happy with this appointment:

www.politico.com/news/2021/01/19/biden-rachel-levine-health-secretary-460278

Harris is going to have difficulties now she can't do photo shoots againts Obama's cages to gain the simplistics vote, she will have to stand up to scrutiny, and that scrutiny will not be because she is a woman, it will be based on her politics.

In short, this weeping idpol shit should be relegated to twitter where you get the pats on the back you are wanting.

Being half American I can see why it would be important to you.

Ummm...there are loads of female heads of state around, the uk alone has had two. 🤷‍♀️

@justanotherlurker - sorry, by idpol do you mean identity politics? I'd kind of hope that her appointment might be the start of a move away from that, where women aren't just represented as a totemic nod but can stand up for themselves, their actions and their opinions in their own right. That may make me totally naïve!

@Justanotherlurker and as for Rachel Levine's appointment- does it matter that she is transgender? If she is the best person for the job? Presumably she will have to be confirmed by the senate so they will have to decide whether her merits are worthy?

@GoldfishParade- yes, you are right. But isn't it great that the USA is catching up finally?

I can see why it’s exciting for people in the US but it does feel a bit like they’re playing catch up on the female leader front (yes I know she’ll be VP). But it is exciting to get rid of trump.

Yes on both counts @Indecisive12.

But it is exciting to get rid of trump

Surely we can all agree on that!

I know it’s AIBU but Jesus Fucking Christ. Isn’t it possible to disagree without diatribes like this?

Yes, it's great for the USA - but we are onto our third female PM in NZ. I'm pleased that stability and decency has returned to the world.

You say “we” but this is a predominantly UK site. Fine to use “we” if you are American or half American but really if you wanted the UK to be excited about this you could have put “the United States will have a woman VP” which would be more accurate.

Women leaders are not a new thing in the UK - Boudicca, Mary Queen of Scots, QE 1,2, Margaret Thatcher, Teresa May.

Harris was only put on the ballot for IDPOL, same as Levine, this isn't a move away from it, it is the UK's equivilant of Corbyn but with an added out of owing a vagina, she has terrible optics on a geoplitical sphere and has a very simplisitc view on domestic issues.

This is the same as the multitude of posts celebrating Macrons win over Le Pen, people falling over themselves to pretend that x population is more progressive than the uk while 4 years later ignoring the facts of his ultra neoliberal policies and clamp down on islam.

Biden is an old school neocon, he and harris are going to have to deal with the same problems that trump did, they won't be so bumbling over twitter, but being neocons they won't be the advocates they have been in opposition, that is the nature of a 2 party system.

I work in one of the most liberal cities in the us, and even they don't like her, and admit that the narrative is trying to be sowed that any critisim is going to be framed as mysognisitc, thats why these sycophanitic posts is being higlighted for posterity, especially whilst you still ignore the many european female leaders.

But maybe that is me and I'm not a flag waving 'GO U.S.A' type who only follows twitter likes etc.

Not really. Mrs T broke the glass ceiling over 40 years ago and other female leaders in other countries before her.
