to cringe at people who talk about "Boris"

Why do people continue to talk about him as if he was their mate?
Has he really succeeded in fooling so many?
It makes me cringe everytime people say it.

Lets see what Boris says
I'd like to meet up but it depends on Boris

on and on it goes.
The man is an embarassment.

YABU. I know exactly who they mean when they say 'Boris'. They don't have to say 'Boris Johnson'. Doesn't make him their mate.

'Boris is doing a press conference at 5pm'. You aren't going to ask which one are you? Grin

Could we perhaps repurpose it?

For example: "I've been constipated for days, but last night I ate a bag of prunes and today I had an eye-watering Boris! Feel ten times better."

It's his name?

It could be him doing a press conference I guess.

It's...his name...

But it isn't his name, it's a brand he created!

I call him Boris because calling him "that colossal cunt" doesn't always go down well.

It’s his name, and it’s not like there are lots of other high profile Boris’s about so no need to say Boris Johnson every time. What do you want people to call him?

Report
Somuddled · 05/01/2021 12:33

What as strange take on it. No one thinks that he is a friend of theirs. It is used to show how little respect people have for him.

I agree with you, it's so annoying. People never used to refer to DC as just David, or TB as Tony.

Report
Imiss2019 · 05/01/2021 12:34

Eh? I think he’s a plank but still refer to him as Boris i.e what time is Boris speaking.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 05/01/2021 12:35

From now on I will call him by his full name just in case anyone is confused as to who I mean and make sure nobody thinks he's my mate.

Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson

I think it's because his first name is more unusual than his last. Apart from Gordon Brown, I can't think of another PM with such a prosaic surname - and no-one really wanted to talk about poor old Gordon, even when he was PM.

I call him Boris. Everybody knows who I'm speaking about. I used to refer to Theresa. Would you be happier if I went.with the full Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson?

Exactly. Dave and Tony-all over the place.

Johnson is too vague as a surname.

To be fair if my Mum said "Davids on the TV at 8pm" I'd assume she meant her brother. And if she said "Tony" I'd ask why my neighbour was on TV/in the paper/whatever.
I don't know anyone called Boris so its obvious who people mean.

It's like Madonna, Bono or Beyonce. It's sign you have made it when you're known only by your first name.

He goes by Bojo in our house. My kids once asked me "what's a bojo"

In my experience people say it with the long-suffering tone of voice used for “that twat.”

“Alright, let’s see what Boris has to say then.”

Usually people don't call him Boris because they like him. It's not because they think he's a mate, YABU.

It strikes me as a very old fashioned viewpoint. What would you rather we do? Bow our heads in respect and only refer to him as the Prime Minister in hushed tones? We live in a world where respect has to be earned these days...I don't see him earning much at all, so Boris it is. Or as is my preference Bozza or BoJo. Mostly because i know the little twerp would hate it.

No one I know likes him either so it doesn't grate.

He's a unifying figure in gloomy times.

Mr Boshambles might be an alternative.
