Why didn’t I know about this cleaning trick with dishwasher tablets?

Cleaning the oven last night, discussing whether we should just put the glass door in the bag with the metal bits even though the instructions says not to. OH suggested I googled to see what t’internet said.

Up came a MN post from 2016, suggesting you use a hard powder, unwrapped dishwasher tablet dipped in water. We tried it and it was amazing. The stuff just came off. Also takes the gunk off the kitchen cupboards and tiles next to the hob. I’ve been wondering round the kitchen with a tab wondering what else it will clean.

I’m a fair age, well versed in various cleaning tips and tricks, how did I not know about this? Neither did my mum. Is this actually really well known? And why hasn’t some bright manufacturing spark come up with an actual cleaning product like this?

I’m obviously a complete minger.
I tried it and failed. I ended up using a blade to remove the gunk.
I can offer dishwasher tablets in the loo.
Our water is ridiculously hard. I chuck a couple I overnight and the toilet is lovely in the morning

The instructions are a bit unclear. Do you mean you mixed the dishwasher tablet with water and then wiped the oven glass door?

Did mine with bicarb this week - worked fine.

It doesn’t work for me. I use Brillo pads instead. Much less messy.

I saw a great tip last week to pre warm the oven before you clean it.... just enough to loosen the grime!

I think you dampen the tablet and rub the wet bit on the glass, repeating as needed.

The pink stuff is really good for the oven door too!

We have a campervan and I use dishwasher tabs ground up with a pestle and mortar, dissolve in half a litre of hot water and pour down the sink.
Keeps the waste water (grey) tank fresh and odour free.

It's been about longer than she has...another one of her 'hacks' that have been around since Moses was a child.... 🙄

Put a couple in the washer on 90 degrees and they’ll clean all the pipes out

Sorry, but I'm boggling at "just put the glass door in the bag".

What am I not understanding?

Denture tablets work well left in the loo for a few hours too.
Really really need to tackle the oven 😤

Some oven cleaning kits come with a strong plastic bag that you out the racks in them add the cleaning chemicals. In theory, you could also include the glass bit from the inside of the door which lifts out in some ovens.

An excellent trick-do you just rub the wet dishwasher tab all over the glass and leave it?

Yeah I tried it- didn't work.

Try wrapping trays in tin foil and putting in bath with dishwasher tablet, another good method.

Is that the soft pods or the hard tablets?

They have. It's called The Pink Stuff and it's simply the most amazing thing known to man. Cheap as chips, 89p a tub from Home Bargains, Aldi etc. It's a paste, you whack on a dollop and it takes off all the muck. And doesn't smell chemical-y.

Love it.

Dishwasher tabs in the cistern or plonked in the bowl?

I used to use Pink Stuff until I discovered Elbow Grease which is even better and also very cheap.

Thank you-I couldn't get past taking off the whole glass door when it's (ime) easy enough to clean it situ!Blush
