Ring doorbell hell!

Hi all,

My neighbors door is right next to mine with only a brick between them. They have just got a ring doorbell (2 days ago) and I hate it!

Not only is the noise bloody annoying but it's covering my door. There is no way they can set it up to not cover both doors, they are just too close.

I don't like the fact whoever comes to my door is now on their bell cam. I also feel uneasy about the fact my kids will be on there, because you know kids leave the house, my house!

I'm pissed off that anything I buy, like a new TV, they will see and be able to have a good nose. Because they can rewatch and bloody pause.

So I need Mumsneters help. How do I go about this? Do I talk to them? How do I word it? How do I tell them that the bell they paid for has got to go? Do I offer to pay for it?

What if they say no? Do I have a leg to stand on here?

Or do I just get a family member with face covered in the night to nick it and smash it? Yes ring do replace nicked bells but not unlimited. I could get it nicked time and again.

AIBU here? Should I just accept that this is the way now? People videoing your door and kids? Idk I just feel they were wrong to get it without asking if I minded.

Funny enough a family member asked me if I wanted one about a year ago and I said no because it would invade my neighbors door.

Maybe say oh that's very handy for any deliveries when I'm out and I can ask to view if anything happens on my side.

You can't do anything apart from out a piece of opaque plastic to the side of it by your door.
They can narrow down the angle of approach as well the motion zones so if people are coming to your door instead, it will be reduced.
The videos are saved for a month so I doubt they'd be saving them all up. On the plus side, you don't have to fork out for any door security

I know they are really popular but surely people should think before they get them. I know it sounds over the top but to me it's the same as if they were standing there in my face with a phone videoing me.

I really do hate it. When I'm in the front room I can hear whenever some one presses it. That stupid sound it makes. Gah!

@Glittertwins we share a path and the doors are so close. Really if they put a screen on the side of it, it would make it still see who were coming to my house. It's a massive invade. I don't care if ring save them for 30 days, they can download them can't they?

Idk how to go about this? I'm not going to live with this though, I know that much.

Honestly if this is all you worry about you’re in a good place. Why the hell would they be sitting pausing to look at what tv you bought? Why would you care that they knew? I’m sure they’ve seen your kids go in ans out many times. They aren’t going to be sitting wondering what they look like.

They will only get recordings if they pay for that service after the free trial
Ours doesn't record only allows us to see things when they are live.
Perhaps talk to them first about your concerns and see if they will voluntarily change the settings.
If you use your path a lot (hint hint) they will be getting continuous alerts to movement which may mean they are forced to limit the alert zones or they will go crazy. It's alterable.
Ours only over looks our rural garden but we've had to limit ours quite a bit thanks to wildlife - we have a magpie that apparently likes the look of our porch

If your only fear is that you neighbours know when you go in or out (which they probably do anyway) then I would just chill out about it

I don't understand what your problem is personally - it's not like you're doing private things on your driveway is it?? Give over OP - you really think ppl are that bored that they're going to watch hours of footage of you and your family entering and exiting your house? seriously? that says a lot about you tbh.
They can watch you live by the magic of vision out of their window you know.

Wind chimes outside your door that will cause the doorbell to record so they’ll have nothing but hours upon hours upon hours upon hours of recording nothing?

You could open your door quietly, reach over and ring their bell (so you’re not in the frame), then quietly close your door. This way they’ll think it’s malfunctioning, get tired of the noise and get rid of it.

But anyone who is in the street will be able to see anyone who leaves or approaches your house, not just your neighbours through their Ring doorbell. It’s really not very exciting, most people don’t give a shit what their neighbours are up to, unless it’s something dodgy.

CCTV is in most public places and your kids will be on that too.

You seem to be seriously overreacting, I can’t believe you’re suggesting getting someone to smash it up or steal it.

You can ask them to block out your part of the drive on the app. Its really easy. I think it’s under privacy. It’s literally a blacked out section on app so they can’t see your part of doorway

Actually I don't think you are allowed to record someone else's property, so the question is are your paths separate but close together or shared?

We actually recently got a ring doorbell OP due to some very violent break-ins in our neighbourhood but I only got one because it only covers out driveway, and I actually really object to people without paths having them. I would check the legislation to see if that's right and let them know that you're unhappy with it.

In terms of the noise, they can very easily turn that down/off. It beeps on your phone anyway.

In terms of the recording, I think you have to talk to them: but there are some places I just don't think they're appropriate because they record other people and I think this is one of those instances.

They can put it up, but you could Ask them how they are complying with GDPR, as It seems to be a type of cctv

I don't save my videos at all. They aren't that interesting and that feature is only if I pay for it. I don't quite understand the angst. They might not even have the motion bit set on, just when the doorbell is rung.

I don't think YABU at all here. Their doorbell is on part of your property, which is wrong, and if it is videoing part of your property also then they are breaking the law.

@Hahaha88, have they not? Videoing somebody else's home and by extension their kids? It's on 24/7 as soon as I open my door and step out it would let them know.

@Bluntness100 they won't be sitting there watching and waiting, because the sodding thing tells them!!! They will look because it will ping off or why else would they have one? Our doors are so close even with the setting set to the minimum it will still tell them. They are not going to turn it off or why else buy it?

Also the tv was just a example. Anything I bring in they will have on video. Why will they look? Because people are nosey and it's right there in their face on video fgs.
