To find these covid snitching threads terrifying

Student house party. 75% voted for OP to call police.

Really?

I think this thread is chilling proof at how far we've fallen in a society within such a small amount of time. Less than a year with constant media brainwashing, all of us essentially under house arrest, and look at us. Clearing out supermarkets and calling the police because "it's the right thing to do" and "they're putting society at risk".

Who else would you have turned in?

At what other point in history would you have colluded with the government to "do the right thing", without any thought for your fellow humans just being people?

They are students. They are broke, they have been confined to their box rooms almost a whole year. Have some heart for christs sake.

And by the way, I do believe in covid. I believe in staying home and wearing masks and doing the right thing. I would never grass though. Ever. And that goes for covid antics, benefit fraud, whatever. I believe people sometimes do what they need to do to survive physically or emotionally.

I think its terrifying what society has become in less than a year.

Who would have thought we would be living on a world where you would be standing in a little yellow circle traced out on a supermarket floor, and not an inch over if you please, else you'll be reported as a health threat!

Is this our world now? In which young lonely people are turned in and fined for spending time together?

I'm not advocating for student parties, I'm advocating for looking away when you see one.

I wouldn't grass either but honestly, I am getting pretty pissed off with doing the right thing, wearing the mask, keeping my distance, not seeing friends and family, sanitising constantly (basically being considerate and responsible for mine and other people's health) and being seemingly surrounded by SO MANY selfish, inconsiderate, entitled wankers who think they're not part of the problem. That they're somehow exempt (apart from mask exempt wearers).
This whole thing has really shone a spotlight on the staggering amount of the population who clearly don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. It's not even about them, it's about who they pass it on to. They don't care.

That said, no, I wouldn't report. More fool me, probably. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@TinySongstress

I agree with you, and I also feel a flicker of frustration. But the leap to grassing is too big IMO. I dont put students in the same category as the other entitled wankers you see around you, probably because... I dont know, we all remember what it was like to be young surely? They've had a shit year and I can understand having had enough of it at that age

I would report recklessly dangerous behaviour

That applies generally, because I want to avert the consequences

If we can get transmission low, then there will be fewer people dying both directly from Covid, indirectly from hospitals so full of Covid patients that other medical procedures have to wait and preventative medicine paused, and the harm from the higher tiers of restrictions

I put all those lives ahead of peoples ‘right’ to party

@TinySongstress

I totally agree.

Also, these parties impact others. We’ve had to send home all 275 year 11 students because a handful of them went to a party, which turned out to be a covid party basically.

So because 10 kids had a fun eve; 265 are now home for 2 Weeks.

Some of those students at that party would have face to face lectures, going into local food shops, etc etc

YABU - there’s a massive difference between having a few friends over and having a party.

I think there’s a vast difference between a party where a large number of people who are at the prime age for COVID infection and spreading are congregating, and someone who pops in to see a family member.

In the very beginning of the pandemic there was a documented instance of a bloke who held a COVID party to see who could become infected first. No consideration for the people being infected, or the people the infection would be passed on to. Oh, he caught COVID fwiw and is now dead.

I have sympathy for people who haven’t been able to see family or friends for the duration of this pandemic and who have been on their own. Students who think that they are somehow entitled to have a party where presumably no social distancing would be happening just because they’re students? No, I don’t have any sympathy for that. Having parties isn’t a right. And while I might not call the police, I would give all of them a wide birth and certainly wouldn’t be offering them any support if they lived in my area.

Acrimonious spilt with partner of 20 years . His sister has been on social media slagging me off every night for the last six months. Finally left my home on Friday . She was there Saturday having travelled 40 miles to see her brother . They then went to visit his son. He has visited her regularly throughout both lockdowns. ( they both have other bubbles) . I was very close to reporting them. He took almost 6 months off work due to supposedly shielding !

As far as I'm concerned people who break the restrictions, students or otherwise, are pushing back the date when life can get back to normal, including seeing my parents again. That's not ok.
As a PP said, we keep having to send chunks, if not the whole, of year groups home from our school to self isolate, because they keep having parties (sanctioned by some of the parents)
The bottom line is, groups meeting and socialising like this spreads the virus. Why should those of us who are doing our bit pay the price for the selfishness of others?
Other countries (including where I have family members in SE Asia) have got this under control, in no small part due to people doing the right bloody thing.

DBIL is flying in from the USA in a couple of weeks. I have just learnt he has no intention of isolating- I am considering reporting him, I have teens who have kept to the rules, even though it has been tough and going on for months. I will be so cross if he doesn't bother (BIL is 47 btw so not a kid).

@AltJ and the long COVID rate?

People spend far toO much time focusing on death and not enough time thinking about long term consequences.

Long COVID is a real thing, and it certainly isn’t something which only affects the over 70’s.

There are actually worse things than dying from COVID. Surviving it with life-long disabilities and health problems.

I don't believe half of them would call the police in real life. They're more of the sort to stare out the window tutting, and then make a handwringing thread on here.

I think the people who are happy to call the police in this situation are the same people who would have been calling the police over suspicions a neighbour had a jewish family in the basement in 1940s Germany. Justifying it with 'they're breaking the law' and 'protecting the nation'

Are you trying to state I must be an far right anti-Semite?

That’s a low shot and utterly invented by you

Your allegiance to "society" is stronger than your loyalty to family?

Dont you realise that "society" is a wide network that relies on the strength of a collection of smaller networks (local communities, families)?

YABU.

We are in lockdown, the more you allow large gatherings, the longer we will be faced with restrictions. Cases in my area are still rising. Just because they are 'young' doesn't make it OK. So they've had a shit time, join the queue.

So you’re just contradicting yourself here then OP.

You say you agree with me but then you also agree with a poster who says that it’s all a bit inconsequential really because it’s only old people who are dying.

Old people who are likely being infected by the students having a party down the road and then travelling back home to see their families who then pass it on to their elderly relatives who then catch COVID and die.

If it was predominantly students and the under 25’s dying would people still have this cavalier attitude?

How many children die of measles every year? Far less than older people dying of COVID but then look at the threads on here criticising any parent for not vaccinating their child because “measles kills.” Saying how unvaccinated children shouldn’t be allowed in schools etc etc etc. But it’s ok for students to have a party because it’s only old people dying after all....

Interested to know if OP thinks “grassing” on other criminals, such as murderers and rapists, is also wrong. Where exactly do you wish to draw the line? Which criminals should we turn a blind eye to?

People are dying due to coved. If some idiots are stupid and selfish enough to flout the law and put others at risk, I think we should be fining them a lot more than we currently are.

To compare people reporting those who are breaking covid restrictions to reporting hidden Jewish people to the Nazis is so stupid and so offensive it takes my breath away.
