Are you not a grown up and unable to tell someone you have other plans?

No can’t get out of it, my oh enjoys seeing their family.

No, though the period of time to visit family without restrictions should be only two or three days in my opinion.

I'd be very happy if shops had to be closed on Boxing Day as part of the trade-off.

I'm desperate to get home for Christmas day.

I'm in another country so it's not going to be possible 😔

I don't mind one-day of seeing family maybe even a day and an evening but a massive amount of time of visiting with people and socialising gets to me and I just want to hide under a blanket!

I’ve used it as a plausible excuse why I won’t be going to my mums. Other years she’s gotten so upset at me saying I’d rather stay home that it wasn’t worth it and I just went against my will

This year it’s just me, baby and dog and I get to cook and eat a meal just as I want

I don’t mind really BUT I really don’t want to have restrictions relaxed then another fucking lockdown to ‘pay’ for Christmas

My family talk to each other about their plans and mix it up each year. If something doesn't work for us, we say so and we adjust around each other. If DM wants to hang out out with her mates and catch up with us on a different day, that's fine. Some years DB travels to his ILs. Some years we have a bigger get-together. MiL is in another country and has a festive birthday. At her last significant birthday, DH travelled over to see her for it for the first time in years and arrived back on a late flight to spend most of Christmas with us. I made other plans so we still had a lovely festive time in his absence, and I'd be happy to repeat the strategy in a couple of years at the next big birthday. 10 years ago it had to be a quiet one at home and everyone visiting us due to being freshly discharged from hospital following DS1's rough birth.

More people should try talking to relatives and mixing it up and not getting stuck in stale traditions that don't work for them. It's better than being relieved that the government is obstructing your rights to a family life.

Don't want to avoid my family particularly but an excuse not to travel to visit people and just spend Christmas day in my pyjamas like people on telly always do would be ok. Just to see what it's like!

Absolutely agree. I would take a fortnights lockdown over Xmas if it meant that was it and the NHS would be likely to cope with an early 2021 uptick in infections.

I just wish lockdowns and the constant constant threat of them would FUCK OFF.

There’s been a rift in my family this year and I admit I’m glad of an excuse to avoid certain people.

I can’t call the current period a lockdown. “Piss all over small businesses” period maybe, but not a lockdown!

I can't be arsed with it at the best of times. And I'd rather carry on with a lockdown for longer, it would just be stupid to let people socialise just because it's Christmas.

I'm glad to have a reason not to visit THREE houses. Rushing each visit so not actually having proper time with anyone, constantly clock watching an not able to relax anywhere. Meanwhile DP gets to drink, socialise and wait to be told it's time to leave.

The kids barely have time to look at their presents, everything feels so rushed.

Really looking forward to our first Christmas at home since we moved out and had DC!

I know someone who is planning on ‘feeling unwell with COVID’ symptoms 23rd/34th December to avoid the family visits 😆

Why should Xmas be any different- is it suddenly OK to mix with all sorts of people just for a few days and then back to not going out, not mixing and keeping 2 metres away?

Ridiculous.

And as for avoiding family if you're not prepared to take a stand and not visit when you hate it, then just do it and stop moaning!

🙋‍♀️ me! Crossing fingers for a lock down over Christmas 🤞

I'd love it, was secretly looking forward to an entire Xmas at home instead of travelling and going between 3 or 4 different houses. And then the potential bubbles were mentioned Sad

Absolutely! I'm desperate to avoid being shoehorned into too hot houses that stink of stale booze and farts, having to eat a meal that I don't massively enjoy, putting up with other people's children for hours on end, the guilt of picking who you see and when.

I’d rather the restrictions were lifted a little and we could go for some
Dinner or a drink with friends out somewhere over a longer period time then stay in a lockdown as strict as this for longer just so people can have a turkey with their fucking family tbh
