So word has it BJ is waiting to see who wins US election. Trump = no deal with EU. Biden = half arsed attempt at EU deal.
I think Trump might win because too many people are so gullible and brainwashed.
So how can we avoid eating crap food from the US? Thus far EU standards have protected us from dangerous additives, excessive phalates in packaging, the list is long.

You'll have to read the packaging, that's all.

I agree, I will be sourcing meat from a butcher instead of supermarket and reading labels very carefully. No way I’m buying chlorinated chicken, bleugh.

Try to buy as directly as you can from local farmers (I understand this can be expensive so might not be an option for everyone).

@ivftake1
But we might not be able to rely on packaging. The US know there is strong opposition so might insist on us removing country of origin labels. Even if the whole product isn't made in the US the components might be. Look at what their standards are on milk for example (from The Guardian)
US rules allow milk to have nearly double the level of somatic cells – white blood cells that fight bacterial infection – that the UK allows. In practice, this means more pus in our milk, and more infections going untreated in cows.

I buy meat from a local, independent butcher and would continue to do so.

Other things, I guess reading the packaging- maybe buying loose fruit/veg and checking it's source.

I really hope Trump doesn't win the election-the man's an idiot!

So BJ's Masterplan is basically summed up as 1) pray the EU will throw us a rotten last-minute bone to stop economic collapse and 2) Look to US on deciding whether or not to accept it.

Whenever I think my opinion of BJ has reached real rock bottom he somehow manages to find further debts to plummet.

Me neither! I’m so frustrated by the whole thing! Hopefully it will be easy enough to avoid when buying produce yourself but I’m thinking about when you go out for a meal etc!

So then only buy stuff that does have country of origin labels?

I will just buy milk from my local village shop, same as meat.

We don't ever buy it. But it will be in every takeaway or ready meal we get. So we will buy it. The thought makes me sick. I only drink organic milk anyway - if you are doing organic anything milk has the most reasons to switch. Fucking America. The thing they are bad at is the thing they want to export. We already have Amaxon, google, etc etc why this?

Do that now, get into the habit. It's a little more expensive but the quality of the meat will show you where they extra money has gone... Even at the minute. I'll never go back to supermarket meat.

Another source to show who relying on labeling on packaging work for us:

If US food exports do make it to the UK, British consumers may be denied information about which products are American to help them get a foothold in the market. The US government’s “Foreign Trade Barriers” document for 2019 catalogues policies in countries around the world the US wants ended.

The document says the US has “consistently raised concerns” about country of origin labelling at the World Trade Organisation, notably because of “the potential to favour select countries, and the impact on US exports”.

flashbac For dairy products, you could look at buying those that have a British farm as part of the branding, such as Yeo Valley or Longley farm. Or vegan versions of the products might be an option if you find the flavour OK.

Very easily. Read the packaging. Confused

I’m veggie already but my friend has said if this happens she will be going veggie coz she doesn’t want to be eating that shite. I think loads will.

I'm worried about fruits and vegetables. On that panorama about it they claimed that grapes are allowed 1000 times more pesticide than the EU allows and also quite a lot of cancer causing pesticides are used in the US.

The vilest food I ever ate was in the USA when I worked there briefly. Sugary bread, weird tasting meat, abominable plastic cheese. God help the UK if that’s what is coming.

How many of the posters here who can afford to buy more expensive meat from local producers voted Conservative?

Report
Jaxhog · 25/10/2020 10:41

I expect that we will soon know which country different manufacturers are from. Regardless of what the labeling says.

I'll also be buying local as far as possible.

Flashback - The key phrase is may be denied. So may or may not happen. No point worrying at the moment.

If the US really are desperate for us to buy their stuff, they can clean up their act. If they choose not to, I choose not to buy their food. And if labelling changes I won’t be buying anything without clear information on where it came from. I don’t eat a lot of processed or ready made foods, so hoping this will be easy to do. My only concern is the cost of my weekly shop seems destined to rise and it’s already quite high.

Most of the fresh meat in our supermarkets is British anyway.

Report
CrotchetyQuaver · 25/10/2020 10:44

Be careful what you buy and where you buy it from. Which you should be doing already as ready meals (for example) may contain chicken imported from a country with lower welfare standards than ours/EU. It's a loophole that's been in existence for many years. Once it's been processed, it can be passed off as being of European origin.
Read the labels, do your own research and ask questions if you're concerned in any way, or buy your meat from a supplier who knows exactly where it came from

Can posters kindly stop parroting the line "read the packaging". As I have posted above, we might not be able to rely on packaging if the US insists on doing away with labelling. They'd be stupid not to as they they we won't accept their crap.
And what about school meals, restaurant meals, chocs and biccies? Formula milk made with US components? Use your 'loaf' please.
