AIBU?

AIBU to tell someone to fuck off in Waitrose ( warning, may contain masks)

Is it me? Why are people so fucking rude in Waitrose? I live near three supermarkets, Lidl, Asda and Waitrose and this never happens in Lidl or Asda (or when I'm with DH funnily enough Hmm)

I have a lung condition, and sometimes cough - I try not to, I wear a mask, I am discreet, I cough into my elbow. I genuinely do understand the sound of a cough can be alarming these days and if someone looks nervous (especially elderly people) I will explain it and say I don't have CV...this is fine, I understand.

But why do people feel the need to be fucking rude and make direct comments or tut give me disgusted looks? It's happened before and just yesterday I had to remove my mask and use my inhaler (I actually sanitise my hands and put a new mask on) Why the fuck would someone give me a dirty look and tut (and I didn't imagine it)?!

So my question is, what is an acceptable response to people doing this or worse, questioning me in a rude manner, because I am that close to just saying fuck off, quite honestly. The only reason I didn't say this to the last person (who asked me if I should be leaving the house Hmm) was because they had a child with them.

I always have a severe case of esprit de l'escalier afterwards (eg I could have answered rude woman with yes, and should your child be in school with an equally judgy look Wink)

It's getting to the point where I am nervous about going out because I it's actually quite upsetting. Would I BU to say fuck off? (DH thinks this is acceptable and I should also add "you cunt" but I don't think I could bring myself to say cunt in Waitrose...)

And please be nice as I am quite end of tether-y about this. I don't think I should have to stay in the house because other people are judgmental, I've already done months of shielding and nearly lost my mind.

Think you've got it right with 'fuck off'

My dd has a similar issue. Next person who says something rude to us will be told to fuck off.

As a cough variant asthmatic I feel your pain I don't think I'd be adding to the passive aggressiveness by telling people to fuck off but I can see why you would want to.

Waitrose is a magnet to the tutters and better than thou wankers that take keeping up with the Jones's seriously. Waitrose have done a great job at implying they're products are somehow added value. It does seem to attract people who think only a better quality of human should be allowed in. Strong eye contact "can I help you?" Should send them scurrying off as they tend to lack any spines. If they do bitch up and tell you 'off' for coughing please laugh in their faces.

Excellent, I'm glad I am not BU Grin

I'm (in a terribly snobby sort of way) quite surprised that it seems to happen in Waitrose and nowhere else. In fairness in appearance I don't usually fit the expected "demographic" of Waitrose (although ironically my piercings and tattoos are covered by a mask Grin and winter clothes!) and I have half my hair shaved but I do very much sound like a Waitrose shopper if I speak or say fuck off.

I have an asthmatic cough. If I need to cough I apologise, smile and explain to anyone near. Never had an arsey reaction. I think you are probably giving off slightly more aggressive vibes than you think!

Flowers
Masks and shopping brings out the worse in us.
But an alternative- I was aware of someone standing a bit close to me in a queue and moved away then turned round to give her a paddington stare. I stopped short as she was smiling over her mask, holding a bottle of wine and a big bar of chocolate and said, ‘this is really shit isn’t it?’ Poor thing lived alone, we’ve just moved into a higher tier and she was lonely. We had a chat about covid and self care and I would have hugged her if I could. Sometimes we misread others eye contact and body language.

I've just seen the opposite. A woman in a mask and with gloves asked the woman next to her to pull the mask on her chin over her face as she has a child with CF at home. The woman gave her a pile of abuse about minding her own fucking business.

She had a mask, so not exempt, but had it on her chin.

Sorry you are feeling horrible about it all. It brings out the worse in people on all sides. Flowers

It wouldn't happen in my Waitrose! I have found shoppers there to be unfailingly patient and kind over the last six months, far more accommodating and understanding than any of the other supermarkets I frequent. I'm going there more often than I usually do because of it!

I'd like to know which half of your head is shaved? Just for completeness before I can decide if YABU Grin

And it's half term in lots of places this week Wink

My local Waitrose definitely has more polite and respectful people in it than the local Lidl, where people seem to push and shove and reach over you and stand right next to you. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Whenever someone tuts at me, and it is always in Waitrose, I laugh and say "oh, I just love a tutter".

viviennemary you know that a lot of people involuntary cough because of asthma, allergies, medication etc?!

Report
PlanDeRaccordement · 20/10/2020 11:08

No. People are being anti-social enough because of Covid without you joining in with the nastiness. Don’t sink to their level by saying “fuck off you cunt” or anything similar.
I’d just smile and say “oh it’s only my asthma/copd etc“ (whatever you have).
You might want to consider also not wearing a mask and walking around with an exempt card or sunflower lanyard if the mask makes you cough and need an inhaler so often. You technically are exempt due to having a lung condition and it causing you to cough/need an inhaler. I’ve noticed people are more understanding of an exempt person having breathing difficulties than they are of mask wearers.

I have the same problem OP

I’ve been glad to live in what’s probably a rough area as people are much more realistic about stuff. I shop at Aldi. That’s quite small, as is the nearby Tesco Express. They’d have no customers if they tried to 2m everyone so I imagine who is fussy gets their shopping differently.

Also, I have heard so many people say they are no longer going to the cheaper supermarkets as they feel safer in Waitrose. Out of all the supermarkets in my town, they have the worst sanitising protocols. Performance security yes, cleanliness no.
