AIBU?

To think people really are CFers when it comes to second hand items?

I am selling an item on a local selling page. It cost me £280 which included the main item plus some extras. The item is in ‘as new’ condition, all original box etc, in fact I think I only used it a handful of times. These items don’t come up very often as they are expensive but they are desirable.

Anyway, I’ve had lots of interest in this item and have had at least four people agree to purchase it, right down to arranging to meet up. Each one of them have then said they won’t take it unless I lower the price! Someone wanted to pay £80 and said they could get it for £200 new. When I refused to lower the price I got a load of abuse!

AIBU to think this is CF-ery to the highest degree? I’m not about to practically give it away and it’s unlikely that they would be able to get this item in such a excellent condition for any less.

I sell a lot second hand on local pages so I know about pricing items at a reasonable price to sell however I think that given it was £280 new and I’m asking £150 it’s a bit cheeky to then try and undercut by another £70!

I just block people like that. Don't even answer them.

I've had this. It's terribly frustrating, sadly you just have to keep on till someone buys it or put it on EBay if it's something easily posted and then you don't have to go through the rigmarole of them coming round.

It depends on the item really. Some stuff has barely any value second hand and selling sites are full of people overestimating how much people will pay for a second hand pushchair etc.

Have you looked at how much other people are selling these items for used? Perhaps look at some eBay auctions that have recently ended to check the cost is reasonable.

Some people do feel entitled to ask for have discounts on second hand items

There’s no harm in asking for a small discount, but to then give abuse when declined it shows just how cheeky they are

A second hand item is worth what a buyer is prepared to pay for it. People can certainly offer what they are prepared to pay, but you are well within your rights to say no. I usually go with something like "I have only just listed it so will hang on for the asking price for now". Buyers should not give you abuse for it though!

Yanbu. The cheeky fuckery I see on my local selling forums is astounding, but not always from buyers.

Someone joined our local neighbourhood forum to sell an item for about £50. I think it was a piece of furniture iirc. But they live about 10 miles away (we are in London, so that's a long way). They declared it collection only or could deliver for £10 petrol money. Definitely cheeky. They went a bit quiet when someone asked in the comments why they were advertising miles from home if they weren't prepared to deliver.

I was selling a brand new Amazon Echo Dot in an unopened, sealed box - checked the going price and they were £40 so I listed it at £30 on a local selling group on FB. One woman simply responded with "mine" and then DM'd me saying she will pay £5, I told her it wasn't open to offers and it was £30, she offered £10, £15, £20 and £25. A couple of people wanted it and she responded to them saying it was hers, I told it wasn't and she called me a fucking cunt and promptly got herself blocked.

But they were prepared to deliver...for £10?

Oh I agree. I was selling something on my local selling page and someone responded but said she'd pay less as she would be travelling in from the next town.

I told her no and said it was her choice to buy from a different area and she was gobsmacked.!

I have recently been clearing out a number of items, some new in box, the others used once and in box in perfect condition.
I reckoned half price was reasonable but quite a few people seemed to feel that I would take anything they chose to offer.
So Theickabob I’m with you - there are a lot of CFs out there.

Yes i've had the same experience with selling higher value items. You put an item on for sale for (say) £200 with a view that you might lower the price slightly. You always get people making stupid offers like £30 or £40.

Whilst I agree people always try to push things a bit and feel they got a bargain, if 4 people have offered considerably less I do wonder if you believe its worth more than it really is.
@Chicchicchicchiclana but they said they would deliver, at a cost, which is fair enough

I always think it depends. So if you list say £150 but every single offer from say over 10 people is £100 you’ve overpriced for the current market. Just because you can see it second hand on eBay for buy it now or whatever doesn’t mean that’s what it will sell for.

I sold a old phone recently. Market place had five the same up for £200 but mine sold for £130. Those £200 ones have since all come down in price because they where not worth £200 to the current market.

However abuse for not selling to someone is not on.

@UnfinishedSymphon wow! That's so rude of her

Wrong to agree a price then seek a discount on arrival in the hope the seller will agree to avoid the hassle. Abuse when the seller won't agree is the cherry on top. Presumably the buyer wouldn'y have been happy if you'd bumped up the price when they arrived.

Would refuse to sell even if they subsequently offered the agreed price.

I also hate it when they haggle your price down, usually with a sob story, you finally agree because you’ve been pestered so much/need the money/have no other interest, to find they have bought them to resell

Though the last time this happened to me, she was posting for weeks trying to sell the items at almost three times the price I sold them to her for.

She still hadn’t sold them last time I looked Grin

On the other hand, I’ve seen some dreadful photos of furniture, in particular, which look uncared for, battered and old and sellers think they’re worth hundreds.

As with everything, an item is worth what someone will pay, but it’s not on to argue when you’ve agreed a price, or to claim it as yours when you haven’t bought it.

I was selling a car once. Can't remember the exact amount but I received a message saying "Hi (hate that!) I'm coming to collect this now for £300(!!!) ok on my way"
When I swiftly told him that absolutely was not happening and that I had also just sold the vehicle 5 mins prior, I got "Oh come on (😡) you want rid of the vehicle and I'm prepared to take it. I'll be there in 2 hours" (even though I had not given him my address!!!)
He was repeatedly told it was now gone. No longer in my possession and likely half way down the A1 by now, yet he kept on & on telling me it was his vehicle, to get the log boom ready and that he'd already put temp insurance on it etc etc 😳
