To ask if there's something I'm missing about the allegedly "controversial" Diversity performance

Diversity performed on Britain's Got Talent, a performance which incorporated a message about BLM. Their performance, as usual, was incredible and sent out some great messages. The video is below.

It's had 10,000 complaints. Why?! am I missing something? Did someone's nipple pop out or something? What is the basis of people's complaints? The only reason I can think is that some people (probably because they're part of the problem) don't like it when others point out that there's racism in the world? Boo hoo to them

Surely it's pointing out that white people kill black people and enjoy doing it - not something I like to be linked to, that happened in gun toting USA not the U.K. - the US is a different place with its own problems.

I haven't seen it - I do wonder if there is a correlation with people who complain about people who get 'offended' and call them 'snowflakes' and the people who have complained about this?

It seems there are only certain people who are allowed to complain about things - when other people do, they get called 'snowflakes' and 'woke'

But white people do* kill black people and seem to be utterly indifferent about doing it.

No we my not "tote guns" in the U.K. but it doesn't mean racism (and systematic racism in authority) doesn't exist. It's quite possibly to care about another country's issues too.

A huge number of the Diversity group are black. Why can't they express their feelings about issues that affect them, their families, their community etc? Heaven forbid they upset the oppressed white people

Divesity were expressing their feelings about something that happened in much more racist than Britain, USA .

It was the wrong platform.

I think it’s hugely important to open up discussions about racism amongst families, especially for children but this was not the right way to do it. It looked like a vanity project for AB to me.

People don’t like those black issues spoiling their nice cosy teatime family viewing. Too political innit. And definitely not because they’re racist.

They didn’t complain about the drivel that was SOS kids or whatever they were called warbling on about climate change. That’s a different kind of political. Clearly. That kind of thing is important! It affects white people!

It's all about the context. It was in the middle of a light entertainment show which usually features cheesy jokes, performing dogs, people sticking swords down their throats, etc. Not really the right place for a dramatisation of an actual murder. If ITV had advertised a dance show by Diversity with the same performance that wasn't in the middle of BGT then I don't think the same numbers of people would have complained.

There were similar complaints when another European country featured a dance version of the Holocaust (I think) on their version of Strictly. Out of place and in poor taste.

It is like watching a painful Oscars speech where an actor/actress or preferred title 'should say' thanks to the scriptwriters, producers, directors, friends, loved ones who made this possible and then goes on a political diatribe or rant about an issue. Wrong platform. Plenty of avenues to get your message out there within this social media age upon us. It is similar to Formula One shenanigans now. Every time. Some drivers kneel, some stand. Get back to the sport. Get back to the light entertainment.

I don’t understand it either OP. BGT is an entertainment show, their performance was technically outstanding (as always) and incredibly entertaining. Way too much over thinking going on.

Well, I thought it was absolutely fabulous!!
Dance is about telling stories and making the audience feel something.
I had goosebumps watching it. Brilliant stuff, we need much more of this kind of story telling in dance. Well done Ashley Banjo!!!

I thought it was a bit naff but I am all for controversial issues being raised during shit primetime ITV programmes so that the hard of understanding can catch an inkling that something in the world might not be quite right.

Also agree with @vonny63 - black people are only allowed to cavort about on TV if its in the Minstrels. Don't care if it was Banjo thingies vanity project, let him have a bash at something with a hint of integrity. As for the 10k complaints, well, misery loves company and is currently bored as there are not as many leisure opportunities on Saturdays lately.

I was surprised at the performance because as others have said BGT is usually a very light show and this is a heavyweight issue. I thought it was brave of them to do the performance because it’s ok to be black and good at street dance but it’s not ok to be black and political about it.

The murder was in america but it sparked protests in many countries including the UK. It doesn't matter what you think, these were massive events that sparked a wide discussion on racism.

There were only a few complaints at the start of the week but awful rags like the Mail and Sun have carried the story every single day to try and whip up the hatred and people have fallen for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the complainers haven’t even watched the original performance. It’s a sad reflection of Britain today.
