AIBU?

AIBU Bin rummaging 😡

Changing username for this as quite frankly it’s embarrassing!

I’m not stickler for food dates. Don’t mind if biscuits, bread etc are out. However, I do tend to stick to use by’s for meat, yogurts etc. I might give slight leeway, but definitely think use by dates are there for a reason!

On the flip side, H is terrible. Thinks you should eat anything, even it is furry, stinks and with a use by date of 5 years ago.

My absolute bugbear is that he bin rummages. He actually rakes through the bin bag demanding to know why it’s been thrown out and ranting about ‘There’s nothing wrong with it.’ Does all the time.

Anyhow, this morning I have thrown creamy coleslaw out that is four dates out of date. I have just caught him eating it with his lunch- he has plucked it out of the bin 😡🤢. It’s honestly made me feel quite stabby.

So AIBU to think he’s a dirty bin ratching bastard with a stomach of steel or should I just give up and embrace the salmonella!

Put it straight out instead of in the kitchen bin. Yuck!

If the coleslaw smelt and tasted fine then it would never have made it to the bin in my house. We tend to use our judgement rather than what the date on the pot says,.

Just throwing things away because of the date is very wasteful.

Not when it's furry and certainly wouldn't bin rummage, but I never ever eat cheese within use by date. It's just not matured enough. Give it extra month. Delicious.

Tbh I would just let him eat it. Has he ever gotten sick? If your fridge is solid, even the 4 days can be ok.

My SIL was like that....

We had to live with her for a brief period of time and one day she bought herself a cooked chicken.

Normally we don’t touch anything that belonged to her as she wasn’t a very nice person and would flip her lid at the littlest of things, but one day I had to chuck the chicken out

It was stinking and rotting.

She threw a major screaming fit about how she was going to eat that tonight (she hadn’t for several nights) and that’s we wanted her to starve! Envy

She also ate sausages once that were swollen in the pack

Just an fyi. There is now discussion about red meat. I assume the discussion will soon extend to other products to fight food wastage

That's absolutely rotten 🤢 if it was red meat then I'd be ok with it but anything that includes dairy or poultry is an absolute no no for me. I'll use bread that has gone past it's use by date provided it's not started to go mouldy

I think if it looks, smells and tastes fine then YABU. You dont have to eat it but if he wants to then dont throw it out.
Use by dates are not reliable. Some things last ages, yogurts especially, some things dont last until the use by date, especially if it has been open a long time.

Invest in a waste disposal unit. Chuck everything down that 😉

Your DH is gross Envy

But I'm just curious - do you not have food waste bins in your area? I assumed everyone had them now. He'd be less interested in the past-it coleslaw if it was nicely mixed with potato peelings and coffee grounds 😂

I keep hearing about these... Do you have 4 bins then?

I used to have a colleague like this, she would do it to show how fabulous, and eco friendly avd sustainable she was, when in fact it was just grim. 🤢

A dose of salmonella or e coli will sort that out.

@TheMumblesofMumbledom i understand where you are coming from. I do use personal judgement with best before dates, however I was once extremely ill with salmonella to the point I was hospitalised- which is why I worry more. Things can be harbouring all sorts of nasties even if it looks and tastes ok.

So many bins!
One for food waste, one for general waste, one for mixed recycling, one for glass, one for garden waste. That’s in our area anyway (garden waste being optional).

@SchrodingersImmigrant That’s the thing, he has never been ill! His mother was the same though. His gut must be accustomed to it!
