AIBU?

To think this is why people buy all brand new clothes for holidays?

We are going on a family holiday to the seaside tomorrow. I am so stressed under mountains of clothes to wash, iron and pack for five people.

AIBU to think this is why so many people go holiday shopping for brand new clothes? Put them straight into the suitcase what a brilliant idea! Wink

Seriously though, does anyone buy all brand new clothes for going away? I used to know someone who bought all brand new underwear and socks for each holiday, so maybe it's a thing?

I’ve never packed an entire suitcase of brand new things, but it was often 50% new or more. And often new knickers yes! I don’t know why though Blush

What people? I mean I have on occasion panic bought pants when I realised we didn't have enough to last the holiday without washing. And bought new UV tops for a hot holiday or ski wear for ski holiday. And now I sound really privileged and I'll shut up before I become unbearable. But no. My kids and I have our usual scratty clothes for holidays.

I have never heard of anyone doing this!

The only new stuff I buy for holidays is activity-specific, eg ski jackets or wetsuits.

Nope, I take what I have and may have an odd item of clothing that's new but not lots of items. I hate "fast fashion" and buying crap just for the sake of it!
Also, I generally wear clothes that are hung up to dry and don't need ironed or I'll iron it just before I wear it. :)
Have a lovely holiday!

Gah I hate packing for holiday now I have children. It was easy when I was packing just for me.

Why are you ironing? I never iron anything. You’re making work for yourself. Anyone in your family who requires ironed clothes can do it themselves.

And no, we wear our usual clothes on holiday. Can’t imagine the expense or waste or storage of buying new for a trip. How bizarre.

Unless we knew we were going somewhere smart I'd tend to pack my old clothes for holidays.

I used to buy all brand new for my 3 DC when we went on holiday from underwear to trainers to full outfits it was just easier for me than trying to sort through everything

Wouldn't you just come back to all that washing plus the stuff you wore on holiday?

I have some clothes that I only wear on holiday that live in a small bag on top of my wardrobe.

Some people like to have some new things to wear on holidays when they’ll be taking lots of photos etc and also treat it as a natural time to turn over their underwear. It’s not a crazy idea on the whole. I don’t know anyone who only takes new clothes on holiday Confused

Well this isn’t great though is it? Fast fashion and all...

Not me, but I have heard of this - clothes to wear all year (season, maybe, and again the next year) but timed to be bought so as to have a new wardrobe for a holiday. I think it’s a thing.

I live in Scotland and it's usually freezing, so I have a case full of clothes that are 'holiday only' and were bought new to go on holiday with, but not all at the same time. I bought some lovely vest-top midi dresses in the heatwave two years ago that have not been back on, they need added to the holiday pile! I do like buying a new thing or two to wear on holiday but would never buy everything new.

Why are you ironing? I never iron anything.

Really odd comment, do people really not know why it is necessary to iron clothes?

Surely if people only bought holiday clothes somewhere cheap like Primark it would still end up very expensive.

We’re on holiday at the minute, the only holiday specific clothing I bought new is a UV swim top for my son, everything else is general summer clothing we already had.

I've seen some people suggest the opposite, pack all your oldest most ruined stuff, leave it all behind so you have room in your suitcase for souvenirs and have new ready and waiting at home

Why would anyone iron children's clothes?

Report
BereftOfInk · 08/08/2020 20:52

Why on earth would you iron to put into a suitcase? Fold it, squash it in the case, any creases are clearly due to travelling!

And no, I've never heard of buying new clothes just to pack. For a start it will just add to the mountain when you get home. I buy DC clothes as and when they need them and I buy myself clothes when mine fall apart.

I remember my dear departed Mum saying to us all that people only look at themselves and what THEY are wearing and couldn't give a toss about anyone else.

Well that was me sorted for hols! I just bring any old stuff with a couple of nice tops to mix and match. No one cares, just go for it.

Unfortunately that wouldn't work for me because I wash things before wearing them.

Total waste of money buying brand new for holiday. New cossie maybe.

Also, you really don’t need much. I’m a seasoned single mum traveller on public transport and planes. I know we don’t need half of what we bring!

Put out everything you think you need on the bed. Then HALF it. Honestly, a pro travel tip!

Do people not buy new clothes for holidays? I live in Wales. It pisses down for most of the year. I don't have enough warm weather clothing so I usually buy around 3 new items and retire any that are past their best.
This year I just got my holiday stuff out of storage and gazed wistfully at it Sad.
